I have a '99. My problem is that I have my headlights pop up when i turn on the driving lights. This didn't happen before a trip to the dealer body shop for some paint work. Also my fog lights used to come on without problems. Now they won't come on unless the driving or headlights are switched on. Dealer is trying to say that it's a $500+ switch. I say bull-crud, they miswired. Anyone have a similar situation or at least a solution without a huge $ repair part? Appreciate this and look forward to some thoughts.
"well if your headlights pop up on the first click then you need to change the motor for the pop ups."
The lights still work, but i guess this is where my problem is. what is happening is that on that first click the headlights pop up and that is what i am most concerned with. I have a bad motor on the driver side headlight, so you think that fixing that should solve my problem?
Did your headlight problem get fixed? I have the same problem with the headlights going up on the first click of the switch when just the driving lights should be on in my recently purchased '03. It's actually at the dealer now getting a headlight motor replaced as it was grinding on shut off.
No haven't done them yet. Had problem with stealership returning my car in a state of pigdom. I can't believe that a Chev dealer with years of business wouldn't take care of a Vette owner, but then it will be the last time my car goes there. Made the shop do a detail(?) that itself was pitiful. Oh well, at least all my Vette club buds know for the future.
If your lights get the fix with a motor would you please let me know? I am opting to get the brass gears and have the motor repaired that way. A whole lot cheaper and I've been told it's really better. More later.

Definitely do the brass gears. The ones in there now are plastic and they will go out again, it's just a matter of when. Put the brass gears in there and they are fixed for life. Get them from Rodney Dickman. Your car has the preferred earlier style motors that bolt together, rather than glue back together with epoxy, very easy to do. Click on "Electrical", then scroll down to "Headlight/other vehicles".

That new GM motor still has the cheap plastic gears in them. You will still have the same problem at some point in the future. The motors rarely ever go bad, just the cheap-o, 15 cent gear. This fix could have cost you only $43 and would be fixed permanently, instead of the ~$400 the dealership will charge you.
Sorry if I sound like a salesman. I did both of mine about a year ago and it's just one thing that I know I don't have to worry about.

Last night my driver's side headlight would not come up. So today, I manually lifted it with the ****. I tried to turn off the lights with the switch and heard a loud grinding sound coming from the driver's side light. I immediatly turned them back to the up position with the switch. That's one problem. I am assuming it is the gears (?). My second problem is even though my headlights are up but off, my driving lights (the amber ones below and my rear side and tail lights) won't shut off because I can't turn my light switch off without gridning the headlight. Now my car in in the garage with the battery draining because I can't get the lights off. No garage is open on Sunday. Can anyone help?

Just turn the lights off. The gear is already ruined. It will only grind for about 10 seconds. Get some new gears.
I had the same problem. Replaced the gears on both motors with the Rodney Dickman brass gears and all is back to normal. No more lights popping up on first click.
