Interesting article in C5 Registry regarding the air flow screen in the MAF unit.
It seems the screen was needed for vehicles that had bends in their air intakes. The bends would cause a disrution in the air flow. The screen correctd this before the air reached the throttle body. The 2002 Z06 no longer has this screen as it was deemed unnecessary because of the direct flow of air from the air cleaner to the TB!
Ouote "With the Corvette's relatively straight passage between the air filter box and the MAF, the straightener isn't needed and was removed."
In my finding I would 100% agree with that. On my 97 I used to have a twin flow and I would get lean codes without the screen. That intake had two bends in it. I switched to a Vortex which is straight and no more codes. Car even ran better. :D
I have a 98 with a vortex. I ran it both with the screen in & removed. I could notice a definate difference with it out. No probelms in the 6 months it been removed. I'd do it if I were you, but some people have had some problems. I'd say you are right about the straight intake. Take it out! SCOTT
