Default Gear swap

OK here I go again - 01 Coupe A4. I have a list of mods I want to do, but want to do them one at a time. The car is stock except for a Pace Car cat back. It has the performance 3.15 rear end and stock run flats. I have never tracked the car but I am guessing it would run high 12's?? in the ¼ based on the time slips I have seen for similar configurations.. I am looking to pull that down to 12 flat, and I am guessing that an intake, 3.42 gear swap, 3000 stall and LT headers are going to get me close. I'm good with all that, and will go for the head/cam change if I am looking for a little more punch, and man would I love a radical idle.

Most of the time the car sits in my garage looking awesome, it's a weekender at most. My concern is the very noisy headers and the 3000 stall, I don't want the tranny to be too loose during normal driving but when I hit it I need it to go.

Three questions:

1 - Will I get to 12 flat with the above mods?
2 - Are there LT headers out there that are modestly quiet without giving up too much in the way of power?
3 - This 3K TC - is it too loose for everyday driving?

Thanks guys.

I THINK you will hit 12 flat, but I'm not entirely certain since I haven't tracked mine yet

A LOT of the noise / lack of noise will depend on your catback mufflers - I put Dynatech LT's on my car and left the stock mufflers on - I was DISAPPOINTED because there was not much of a noticable change in sound at all - THEN I added Magnaflow catbacks, and my sound is When I did my head a cam swap, the noise from my Dynatech/Magnaflows increased about 3 - 4 times - Header wise, my vote for Dynatechs

Stall wise, mines a daily driver, and I've got a Yank SS3200 - LOVE IT - drives almost like stock UNTIL you step on it - then hang on.

Why not 3:73's or 3:90's ?
A 3000 stall will feel a little looser. But, you will get used to it.
I think 12:2's With sticky tires w/ your above mods.
3:42's wont help that much off the line....

A 3200 stall is fine for daily driving with 3.42's or 3.73's.

As for headers, I'd recommend American Racing headers. IMO, they have the best design and are the best bang for the buck.

Your only problem with 12.0 is traction at the track.

I don't have a problem with 3.73's at all. I do occasionally highway the car though and don't want it hummin too much at say 80 or so. If the 3.73's are cool at that speed - I'm all over them. Am I going to need the head/cam package for the 12.2 e.t, or just sticky skins?

Thanks for the advice.

The 3.73's and a 3200 stall with a full bolt on car will easily get you 12.2's in decent air.. You will need at least a drag radial.

I'm going to take you up on that, you have a similar setup to what I'm talking about?

Pm me, I've got ECS's (GeorgeZCam) cam in my car if you want to check out idle. Also pm Hot Wheels,he's a coupe with ECS's GeorgeZCam, I think he's got stall convertor also. Vette Z16 has the AR headers, and Dan's 98(Seaside)has AR headers in a C5, and a lgx3cam and ar headers ina c5 coupe. HotWheels,VetteZ16 and I are all in Toms River.

You should be able to hit 12.0 with no problem with the mods you specify. You will need drag radials and line lock will help as well....

Drop your car off at ECS for a blower. You will hit your goal with no problem.

12 flat may be dicey with specified mods. As long as you're swapping out the rear end, consider putting in a 3.90 with the 3200 stall converter. Your biggest challenge, as noted, is going to be getting the car to hook up. A 15" rear rim with a correct height tire (about 28" I think) as wide as you can stuff in the wheel well with maybe 7 psi and screws in the rim to hold the tire in place will give you a launch that will test your seat back head rest every time you drop the hammer.

Be sure to post on here what happens.

Thanks for all the advice. Looks like I'm going with 3:73s and a 3200 stall to start.

I'll let you know how I make out.
