I am removing the motor from my wife's 98 coupe, which is totally stock and has 2.73 gears. This is unlike any motor I've removed before - and I realize that its designed to be removed from the bottom. However, I've seen the write up's posted where someone has successfully replaced an engine from the top, so I know it can be done.
What I'm looking for is tips on dealing with the torque tube. Where should I "break" the drivetrain apart? Should I disassemble it at the joint between the block and the "bell housing", or where the "bellhousing" meets the tube? Any advice on removing and reinstalling this?
Take the five bolts out were the torque tube join's the bellhousing. If it's a auto make sure to loosen the allen bolt that holds the torque tube shaft to the flywheel. I pull all mine from the top normally only takes a few hours.

There is an inspection plate (black rubber in the front bell housing). Pop it out and you'll see the collar that ***** was talking about. You might have to crank the motor around to get at it.
Here is link to some more info on pulling motor from the top.

I may be wrong, but when we were removing and installing GBVette's forged 402 we had to drop the front crossmember down... that made it worlds easier to move the motor foward a bit then up and out.
