My glove box will not close enough to shut off the light switch on the right hand side. Does anyone else have this problem? What have you done to fix it?
At night I can see light coming out along the top glove box door seam edge.
I was thinking of attaching a couple of round plastic disks to close the gap and shut off the switch.
Yes, my 2000 did the same thing. I should have tried to fix it myself, but instead, I brought it in. The dealership changed the glove compartment door. This would have been fine as it did fix the problem, but I no longer have the sticker listing the car's options. This was a bummer for me. From that moment, the car was no longer "cherry".
And this sticker is totally impossible to replace. I called Bowling Green, Chevrolet HQ, etc. It is protected like a VIN plate.
So if you are willing to loose your sticker with the option list, go ahead and bring it in. But I'd advise trying to re-align it, etc., first.
Hopefully the dealer can fix this...in the meantime take comfort in knowing that the system will turn off after about 15 mins...in the old days it would stay on all night and then when you turned the key in the morning, no more juice. Try to get it re-aligned.
I used a fat rubber foot placed at the point on the door that the switch hits. If you replace your door, it will only deform again when sunlight heats it up again.
The real problem is that the switch is a defective design. It's plunger is way too short. Typical GM quality. They have known about this problem since 1997 and have not fixed it.
I fixed it over lunch. It is real easy. You take either 1 or 2 small velcro disks, black is best, and stick the stack to the door side. Then, on the top stick a black plastic disk. I cut the disk from a plastic ring notebook divider.
I can't tell for sure since it is daylight out but the plunger can be heard stroking in for a long run.
