Morel Lifter Cold Tick Solved - Switched to Amsoil
Ever since I put in my Morel lifters, they would be quiet upon first start and then about 30 seconds later would tick for a few minutes until the oil warmed. Once the oil warmed a bit (not hot, maybe 100 degrees) the lifters would quiet right down.
Up until this last oil change, I had been running the German Castrol 0W-30. My supply of German Castrol finally ran out so I switched to Amsoil 5W-30. Several cold starts so far with the new oil, not a single peep out of the lifters when cold. It appears that thicker German Castrol was the source of the issue all along.
I should note that the German Castrol has a viscosity at 40 degrees C of 68.5 Cst whereas the Amsoil 5W-30 is 55.8 Cst.
Very interesting that a lower viscosity would fix a tick. I would have thought a lower viscosity would increase 'bleed-down' and the resultant lower lash would cause ticking.

I'm using Redline 5W-30 with a 40C cSt of 62 and a 100C cSt of 10.5. I get a ticking when the oil temp goes above 200F. I have been thinking of going to Redline 5W-40 or Mobil 1 0W-40 but he viscosities are about 35% higher at those ranges and am concerned about excessive oil pressure at high rpms. I am running COMP 850 lifters and wonder if going with a different lifter such as the Morel, Caddy, or LS7 would help.
From what I understand of the Morel's, the internal clearances are quite tight and the thicker oil was not getting in too well until it warmed. The slightly lower startup viscosity seems to have solved that problem, although I do notice my hot oil pressure is down a few psi.
