well, got my first dose of Corvette maintenance today, or soon to be maintenance. Had the Vette out this morning, thought I kept smelling antifreeze while I was driving and when I got home and raised the hood, I found out why I was smelling antifreeze. It was leaking right up under where the hose hooks to the tank. I took off the shroud for a closer inspection and still can't seem to find where the leak was coming from. But it is definately leaking. Any ideas? I don't guess there is an easy fix are they? Is there a site to a link that shows pics of a radiator being taken out with instructions?
Any other ideas? And where is the best place to get one without paying the $580 from MA
Gene Culley will have a good price on a new one. Make sure it isn't the hose connection. Also, the plastic end tanks are sealed and held in place with tabs, see if the end tank seal is leaking.
PS: If you are going to spend over $500, I would go with a DeWitts at that point.
Are you talking about the upper radiator hose?
Make sure it is not just leaking around the hose. You might try changing the position of the clamp, or replacing the clamp if you cannot see a crack in the radiator tank.
Clean the area, let the engine get up to temperature, and you should be able to spot the leak.
If you don't want to spend the big bucks, I would suggest going to www.rockauto.com. They have the cheapest prices I've seen for parts for all kinds of cars. After I replaced the radiator in my truck for the same problem, I checked their prices on Vette radiators, they weren't much over $200. However, if I needed a radiator for my Vette, I'd go with the DeWitt's rad. and gain the extra cooling the Vette can certainly use.
OK, I found it......it is the plastic tank cracked on the top.....right over the hose. Ok, now...........how do I take this old radiator out???
From memory:
Remove the upper support, which I think you likely already have off the car. Disconnect the hoses (assuming it is drained at this point). Get under the car and unplug the fan assembly and open all the cable clips. The fan assembly rotates (I believe the driver's side goes up) in a clockwise fashion to disconnect one side then the other side will slide out to the side. If you look at the clips you can figure it out. Once the fan assembly is out the radiator will then lift out.
