Shift Kit (specifically transgo) Would you recommend?
I recently bought a automatic c5 corvette. I have been driving stick all my life. The automatic is nice in traffic but the shifts seem a little muddy. I still don't quite understand how a shift kit works. Ive been on transgo's website but still have a few questions. I want crisp shifts but not jerky ones. For those that have a shift kit, are they jerky, or can u make them silky smooth with some throttle control. What exactly is the kit changing on the transmission?
The only person that I know that has used a TRANSGO kit was was ENGLANDGREEN. If you contact him, he can provide you some accurate feed back. He now has his own shop in FLORDIA.
Sounds like it allows you to control shifting instead of the computer ... but it is unclear if the kits work for the Corvette based on the web site ... all the 4L60 references are for vehicles with the tranny directly off the engine. While the changes should all be internal, I'd call them to be sure if what the kit does is what you want and will work on the Vette .... they're contact info is:
I put a Transgo shift kit, plus the billet servos in my stock tranny and it would practally snap your neck off when it shifted. Huge difference. The level 5 tranny I have now has one in it, but with the stall convertor, it's not as harsh.
A tune on a stock trans can give you almost the same if not better results then a kit. Just get a tune, you will also benefit from it by getting a few more HP and TQ.
I have the Predator tuner and it really woke up the auto tranny. You can adjust the shift point and firmness your self to suit your tastes (and then re-adjust later). It also removes the torque managment which really makes it feel like you have more power to the rear wheels (but now when it shifts into 2nd gear at 3/4 to wot I loose traction and it barks for 2 seconds and on the on ramps the rear end will kick out before TC kicks in - kinda fun unless the road is wet). I do need some new sticky tires which should help with my loss of traction. But what is nice is at half or less throttle you it is hard to tell its not stock (except a little smoother and quicker now). Even at 3/4 throttle the shift are not bad after 2nd gear kicks in. I think I would look into this before I tore into the tranny IMO.
Hey Jeep... did you adjust the shift points? If you did, was it by rpm's or mph? I have a predator also and I removed the trq mngmt and max firmed up the shifts but I didnt mess with the shift points. If this helps can you tell my what you set them to. My car is an '02 a4 coupe. Thnx

I’m not sure off hand what I changed them too. I played with it a couple months ago and I adjusted them up like 5mph/500 or 1000 rpm higher? (Cannot recall exactly). Just play with it and see what you like - you can always adjust it back ( I would not max out anything – IMO it may increase wear or possible reduce tranny life). When I first purchased my predator I asked a few guys what adjustments they recommended and when from their. I am pretty happy with the results over all.
Did you max out firmness or just adjust it up some? I don’t think I would max the firmness since that would be harder on the tranny over time and reduce the tranny life IMO. I think I set mine at +10 firmness.
Do a search on the scan tune section and you can see old treads with recommended setting or maximum performance.

to a point.
a handheld programmer will allow you to increase line pressure and quicken the shifting process (and other things as well). And you can make changes at-will; one setup once at the dragstrip, other (more tame) settings for normal driving.
But, an A4 program change can only take it so far. Shift kits can go further; if needed.
