Question for QuicksilverC5
Thanks, Mark
Thanks, Mark
I don't know if this helps but I just did mine and it took 6.5 quarts to put the oil right at the top mark. And it stayed just about there after running the car for several miles.
In response to your questions:
I had the oil change done at a Chevy dealership in order to ensure that Generous Motors would have a record of the change on their computers and I would have official 'documents' (work order) as evidence, in case of posssible future warrantee claims, that I had indeed complied with factory recommendations vis a vis 'necessary routine maintenance'...
Also, before I get down to the 'nitty-gritty', it should be noted:
The dealership was very nice, allowing me to be with the car and watch the whole operation from the time that it went up on the lift to the time it was back on the ground.
The dealership used a hoist which did NOT permit the vehicle to be 'tipped' a bit (rear higher than front) as some do/may be recommended in order to get 'every last drop' out of the oil pan. And 'ditto' in terms of the total amount of TIME they allow it to drain - the oil was allowed to drain only until it stopped 'drizzling out' in a continuous stream and started to come out 'drop by drop'. THUS, I suppose, if one wanted to be picky, one MIGHT argue that there still might be a small amount of oil left in the system (I would say less than 1/2 cup; the reader can use his/her own estimate) that *might* 'distort' the whole result... BUT, that said (and to finaly answer your questions):
We 'work' in 'litres' up here in Canada.
The owner's manual calls for 6.1L (or 6.5 U.S. quarts). (For the record, 1 U.S. quart = .94135L; 1L = 1.0623 U.S. quarts, so 6.1L = 6.48 U.S. quarts)
The dealership *refilled* my C5 (with the new UPF44 filter in place, which was NOT prefilled) using 6 FULL one litre bottles and there is still 800ml (4/5th Litre) left in the 7th bottle (I measured carefully) so that means that they added 6.2L (or 6.586 U.S. quarts).
After I got home, parking in my garage and allowing the oil to drain down for some time, I *carefully* checked the oil level *several times* and the bottom line seems to be that the oil level is eiher 'bang on' the dipstick's 'full mark' or MAYBE (and I stress MAYBE) just a 'TINY smidgen' above it, by an amount roughly equal to the eatra 1/10 litre (roughly 0.095 U.S. quart) one might argue they over-added, based on my calcs.
So the bottom line seems to be, for 2001 C5's:
If one changes the oil and filter as described (engine warm, 'no tilt', drain only until it stops 'running' and starts 'dripping', do not pre-fill the filter) for all practical purposes/within a possible SMALLl margin of error, it takes EXACTLY what the manual says it should: 6.1L or 6.5 (actually 6.55) U.S. quarts.
I SUPPOSE one could point out that it is possible that things could vary depending on such things as vehicle/engine type, model year, std. vs auto, actual BUILD time in a given model year, etc. BUT the above is what I 'got' insofar as my *2001 C5 Auto equipped coupe* is concerned - essentially EXACTLY what the manufacturer says it should take...
