Help - Road Course Junkies - Setup Questions
Can someone give me some alignment numbers that they are happy with for street and track use? I have an '01 Coupe with unmodified Z51 suspension and usually run Hoosier R3S03 or G-Force R1 (yuk!) tires. I have not lowered the car at all (yet).
Another problem I continually have is the steering wheel keeps creaping out of center. The car tracks straight generally but after a few days from alignment, the steering wheel becomes off center. Anyone have this issue? How do I resolve that? The dealership just keeps straightening it up but offers no service on keeping it straight...
I currently have 1 degree of neg camber up front and 1.1 in rear (dealership did the 1.1 on their own...) and although the printout shows very little toe in rear, the left rear looks to have excessive toe in and the car is quite squirelly over bumps on the street, especially when driving in a straight line.
Also, should I buy a jig set to do alignments myself, anyone know the torques for all the alignment bolts? The service manual seems pretty vague ('99 manual, '01 on order).
Thanks in advance for any and all help/suggestions!
I just copied the new Z06 alignment specs out of Ken's newsletter. It's a little less aggressive than I normally use. I assume that by "7 degrees" you mean .7 (7/10) of a degree - negative.
Left to their own devices the dealership will sometimes give one some pretty messed up numbers that are "in the specified range" - even though their on the extremes of that range. Mine does anyway.
THANKS!
Oh - nice wheels BTW!
Anyone else found a magical combination for a Coupe?
Cheers!
Chuck

This is what I use on all of my track/street cars. It works! The tires will show wear over 30K, but honestly, I've never had a set of tires last that long anyway.
Try this:
Front:
1.5 Camber
5.9 Caster
1/16 Toe Out (Both Sides for 1/8 total)
Rear:
1.0 Camber
1.16 Toe In (Both sides for 1/8 total)
You'll probably have to lower the car a little in order to obtain these numbers and lowering at least 3.4" will dramatically affect the handling. If you really want the car to handle add the poly-graphite bushings from VetteBrakes. Properly installed they'll allow 1.5 degrees camber and the car will always track straight.
Your steering wheel is probably creeping due to misalignment and loose torque specs on camber adjusters. Just a thought.
