I have to replace an EMT and need to understand the proper procedure. The GM service manual does not mention unscrewing the TPMS and dropping it into the tire before demounting the old tire. The Tirerack tech section recommends doing this. I would prefer leaving the TPMS in place so I don't have to replace its rubber grommet. What have others done?
Do you have a tire machine that is rated for removing/replacing an EMT tire? The EMT tire has a MUCH stronger bead/sidewall than a non-EMT tire. If the tire machine is not rated to hanle an EMT there is a fair chance it will damage your rims trying to get the tire off/on.

You have an '01, correct? If so, you have the "new" style TPS. The "washer" isn't the old style o-ring, but a molded stepped rubber seal affixed to the valve stem. So, 1) you don't have to worry about removing the TPS - you won't hurt the seal, and 2) you couldn't replace it anyway.
The advantage to dropping the TPS into the tire is that you don't have to worry about the tire monkey damaging it when he removes the tire. Otherwise, if he's careful and positions the tire correctly, he can break the bead before he gets to the TPS, but he has to be paying attention, and give a damn.
