Default Vortex modification

I was under the car today changing the oil and looked up at the Vortex. Given all the talk about hydrolock I was wondering about rotating the scoop 180 degrees so it is at the bottom of the hole in the shroud aiming upward to shield the filter from water being sprayed up on it. Anyone tried this? Significant impact on performance? Does this even make sense - is there a real risk from rain and road spray or just from more significant amounts of water i.e. deep puddles?

thanks :)

I think it would defeat the purpose of having a Vortex in the first place if your worried about hydrolock get a Donaldson or don't drive in puddles.

No I don't think it would help that much. The Vortex is one of the better bottom feeders. I have been wondering if it was possible to work on some temp fix for rain conditions (but I usually drive my other car, so not much of a rush...)

It probably won't hurt performance much, but it won't help or prevent hydrolock either. You have to be in water deep enough to submerge the entire hole in your shroud before you will hydrolock. You could hydrolock in less water if the water is pushed in there by the motion of your car through it. Somebody posted an example of how hydrolock works a while back. If you try to drink through a straw with a hole in it, it is very hard to get the liquid up the straw, but if you completely submerge the hole too it is very easy. Hydrolock works the same way, but there are obviously other factors.

Heck yes this would make a big improvement as far as the potential for you to experience hydro lock but like someone mentioned earlier, this would defeat the purpose and function of the the vortex "ram air induction." You'd basically be going back to your stock setup but with a better filter.

To be perfectly honest I wasn't worried about it before seeing how exposed this thing really is from below. It's hard to imagine how this could not get moisture on it when driving in rain. I can avoid standing water on the road but can not always avoid rain. The towel idea sounds good but lying on the ground to put it in place doesn't! (or is that what the passanger is for?)
:)
My logic was if I could trade off say 25% of the performance gain for the sake of added protection it might be worth it. It sounds like the risk from rain is minimal though.

Maybe I should just forget about it and go for another drive before winter storage!

There have been some pretty heated threads on this subject. I and many others believe there is no "ram" effect with these. These just pick up cooler air because they are outside the engine compartment. That being the case, his idea would not hurt performance, but I also agree with above posts that it's not likely to effect hydro-lock either. Just IMHO.
