Default Tranny/Diff Leak

Ok - I started disasembly for my clutch swap yesterday, and just got everything off, and almost ready to drop the rear-end. As I was removing the exhaust, I glanced up and noticed alot of dirty fluid on the tranny and diff.

It looks like its leaking where the tranny and diff connect - like the gasket failed. Its not too bad a leak since its been parked in the same spot since Sunday morning, and there isnt a drop on the floor.

Here's my question - how invloved is it to change the gasket between the transmission and the rear diff? I figure since I will have the entire rear assembly out of the car to change the clutch, it should be pretty easy to change the gasket.

Anything special that I need to know before diving into this? Any recomendations, suggestions, ideas?

All input is appreciated.

Thanks!

It's actually an oring. Check the vents for the diff and tranny to make sure its not seepage from there. I just rebuilt my diff and swapped the tranny, I bought a new o-ring and used silicone to help it out a little.

Where's the vents??? Do I need to drain the Tranny and Diff before I pull them apart, or just the transmission (I'm assuming the transmission is whats leaking, as the Diff should be sealed - no?).

Thanks!

Diiferential is open at the transmission joint, so drain it. The transmission is sealed. There is a vent for the trans on the top just off to the right side from middle. Differential has a vent on the driver side about center on top.

Thanks for the info - I had them backwards - I was guessing that the diff was sealed. I'll definitely check the vents - hopefully thats all it is.

A few more questions....

What would cause the vents to leak that much fluid? (Again - I'm guessing that they shouldnt expell any fluid) Would I need to replace the vents? How can I tell if the vent is whats leaking?

I'll take some pictures tonight when I pull the rear-end out of the car.

Thanks for the help!

----- UPDATE ------

Ok - I didnt get the rear-end completely pulled tonight, but I did get it dropped down far enough to look at the top. It looks like the top of both the Transmission and Diff have fluid all over them.

I'm guessing this means that the vents are leaking?

How do I correct this - replace the vents? How difficult is this?

What would cause the vents to leak like that? I'm going to try and get some pics tomorrow when I finally get it pulled.

Thanks for the input!

If you have fluid coming out the vent on the transmission and the differential then they are both overserviced.

A vent is just that, it's an open hole for the case to breathe so they won't leak unless overfilled
