put the car in gear,.. a large prybar jammed up between the tunnel and the teeth of the flywheel. Trust me it wont move at all! its the easiest way.
GOOD LUCK!
Simple flywheel tool. Less than $25 at most parts stores.
That would work better than rotating the engine so #1 is at just before top dead center, pulling the spark plug and filling the combustion chamber with STP and replacing the plug. Don't ask.

uh uh. Let's just say that STP is non-compressible so if the combustion chamber is full and you try to rotate the piston into it, the crank won't turn and you can loosen the flywheel. The rope mentioned above does the same thing but comes out a LOT easier than STP. And that's all I have to say about that.

I like tools. I like finding excuses to buy more tools. I like using the correct tool for a project. I don't like using the wrong tool which might damage other parts. I don't like having the wrong tool failing or hurting me at the most inopportune time during the project.
Tools can be purchased or you can borrow the correct tool at most auto parts stores.
I use this type of tool to lock the flywheel.

That's what I used. Also helpful to spin the flywheel while tightening since there is a pattern that requires it be spun in the process. A real pain but easier with this tool if you are working alone like I was as it can all be done from under the car. For tightening, I would rotate the flywheel (for the pressure plate) and then wedge the tool handle against the floor so I could focus on tightening the bolt to the correct torque value. Almost brought back my muscle tone (not!!!)
