Hey guys, what would be a good stall speed for an aftermarket tc on a stock '02 a4 with 2.73's? Want to improve 1/4 time and better acceleration. Thnx
If the car will only have this mod, I wouldnt go to big. Otherwise the best alternative is to match your stall with your engine mods to get the best performance. I wouldnt go any higher than 2800 to 3000 stall right now.
Got a CAI, predator tune and Borla straight pipe exhaust. One guy suggested 1900-2100. Too low?
I think a stock converter stalls at about 1600 - 1800. So whats the point of a 1900 - 2100 stall. For what it will cost you its a waste of time and money.
You should do a gear change first - or do a stall converter and new rear at the same time - its the same labor more or less. Go to a 3:42 rear and a 2800 - 3000 stall. That combination will really wake up the car and you'll be smiling. That set up will also be fine for future mods you may want to make.
I put a 3:42 rear in my 03 A4 that had 3:15 gears and noticed the difference immediately. I am planning to change the cam and will do the stall at that time but I wish I had listened to the guy that put in my rear end and had done the stall converter at the same time.
What does the gear change involve, just swapping the ring gears themselves? Will I lose top end speed?
No, you have to swap the entire rear carrier - ONLY a FEW!!! shops accross the US can successfully swap the ring and pinion in a C5 carrier and make it NOT whine
I'd do gears FIRST, then a stall converter, or BOTH at the SAME time -
I think you are not approaching the problem correctly if you do a stall only - if you are only going to do 1, do a different rear carrier
see my sig for details on my setup
Alhambra, CA - funny, I just purchased something off ebay from there!

I will cost as much to change the gears as to just purchase a new differential. You can purchase a new GM Z06 3:42 rear for about $1,100 without a core charge and the install will be about $300.00.
Top end will not change much and you will get there a lot faster. ETs will go down some. Over all top speed of the car will still be a lot more than anybody really wants to drive it. I've hit 145mph at 4,000rpm and was running out of road fast.
Thanks for the advice guys. This will help me to plan my budget. These are things I want to get out the way before I supercharge it (including my wedding in nov. j/k). I was on the 152 freeway a few months ago over near Salinas CA. Open straight road, no cars... 160mph and it wanted more but I chickened out. I want to aim for 200, on a track of course. We'll see. Thnx again.
With 3.73's you will still top out past 170 with stock size wheels. If your budget allows i would do both gears and stall. The rear carrier comes out in order to do the TC and if you do gears, the TC is right there. Pay for labor once. I went from 2.73's to Yank SS 3600 and 3.73's....the difference is dramatic. The vette blows away the stock tires at anything below 29 mph when you nail it without the traction control on.
If you plan on doing only "one" modification, go for a 3.42 rear over a converter..... in your case. The converter most likely will not give you the desired results with a 2.73 rear. If you cannot do both at the same time, but plan on having both eventully, then do the converter first and go to a 2800-3000 Pro Torque. That way if/when the funds become available you can have the rear installed much easier, even by yourself in your garage (just don't forget to change the shift points).
I agree; that with 2.73 gears - once the TC is no longer at max STR... the RPM drop to the 2.73 gearing will be too great. It kinda needs to be a matching set.
