Default GM Air Filter VS Others

I need to replace the air filter in my stock 2001 Coupe. What brand air filter do you recommend? Are brands such as Fram of equal quality to the GM filters? Thanks

in my honest opinion even a cheap filter like a fram or autozone brand would be better than an old dirty/clogged filter.

You'll get a lot of opinions on a question like this. If you want something that's re-usable you might look at S&B, K&N, GREEN, AMSOIL, etc. FRAM has their "Airhog" and has also just come out with "Synwash" filters. It's a synthetic filter that you wash out and re-install w/o oil. The tv commercials have just started airing. Availability for all applications might be limited.
Just be careful when it comes time to re-oil a re-usable cotton gauze or synthetic filter that you don't over do it, causing the MAF wires to become contaminated. That's what causes many to become disenchanted with them. Oil sparingly according to the directions on a clean, dry filter.
If you want to continue to use a paper disposable filter, then AC DELCO from your favorite dealer or auto parts store is a good choice.

A paper filter is fine, like an AC/Fram. Just remember when a filter passes more air like K&N, it also passes more dirt. Do a search on here. Someone did and extensive test on all filters. It is a very good read.

Any new filter is better than a dirty plugged filter or no filter.
Any major national brand is fine.
If you want more airflow go with one of the aforementioned cloth re-usable filters.

AMSOIL Ea Air Filters are significantly different from anything on the market right now. Made in the USA in partnership with Donaldson and Wix. C5 part number is EAA83.

Hotwheels57 said it best about the K&N style filters which is why I stopped using them. I found this out with my '87 Grand National's intercooler and MAF. Residual oil build up on the intercooler reduces the cooling efficiency.
Look at any paper filter and you'll see the difference between a cheap one and quality. I use WIX, NAPA, GM.

You could also contact a forum GM parts vendor and order a few of the A/C Delco's. They seem to consistently do well in all the testing I have seen.

Airaid filters are ten times better than K&N. They don't collapse and maintain their strength after cleaning. I've got one on my 2000 and love it!

They also will not break your bank and don't post any overstated horsepower gains.
