Default Transmission tunnel insulation?

Whilst carrying out the shifter adjustment on my Z06 and doing various test drives I discovered just how much noise is coming from that area particularly from the drive shaft whirring away inside the torque tube. Has anyone packed the transmission tunnel that surrounds the torque tube with sound deadening material? Obviously I have to be aware of the heat build up in that area.

thanks

Well, let me see here.

1. I like the noise coming off my car at wide open throttle (that's the only way I drive her).

2. If I wanted a quite ride I would have purchased a Lexus 430 sedan.

Not sure why you are asking this question.

Are you actually aware of the noise that I'm referring to??? It's not the glorious beat of a V8 engine nor is it that fantastic roar and popping and banging of a quad borla stinger exhaust. I don't want a quiet ride but I want to hear all of the nice sounds!

Not sure why you posted that reply.

I installed some heat duct insulation called Frost King It about 1/8" thick dense foam, has a tackey adhesive with a thick aluminum foil outer cover. It quiets the road and mechanical noise and helps keep out the heat. It works very well! I also put some foil covered bubble wrap in certain areas on the tunnel which really helps block out the heat. No more HOT center consoles!

You can buy it all at Home Depot or lowes.

Heres an example of the stuff installed:

If I remember correctly, the silver bubble wrap is called REFLECTTEX

I did the same as Bill except on the inside of the tunnel. I was putting in an "Abbs of Steel" alum. plate and added two layers of the bubble/foil insulation, mainly to keep some of the heat from entering the cabin area. It has helped but the center consoled will warn inside.

As far as l noise, are you sure your not hearing a bearing/U-Joint going out?

Good luck

Thanks for the excellent replies.

Superb photos Bill.

The heat duct insulation does seem the answer, will see what I can find here in the UK.

Don't think I've got any bearings/joints on their way out but will keep my ears open. The noise isn't too disimilar from my brothers Supra when he also had it stripped out prior to soundproofing.

Try this thread we did on the subject a few days ago. You'll find that Damplifier is probably the best stuff for the job.

that is a good product. It will add a lot of weight though.

So you need to determine your goals first, then decide on the product that fits your needs/wants.

here's the lightweight & inexpensive alternative:
