I cleared the code for U1096, it must have been an old code when I unplugged the AC unit to do my stereo a few weeks ago. Anyways here is the deal.
When I first start the car in the morning and drive around the AC works perfectly, no issues at all, after about 15-20 minutes of driving it just turns itself off (the little ac light turns off but continues to blow, but then it just blows hot air). After this happens, everytime I press the AC button again it turns on for about 2-3 seconds and then turns off again. What can be causing this problem. BTW I cleared the codes last night and the problem did not throw any codes, could this be an actual problem with the AC control unit?
Also this problem does not go away unless the car literally sits for hours, if it just sits for 10 minutes to an hr, right when I get back in it and try to turn on the AC the problem continues to occur
This may or may not fix it. Check the ground block on the right side of the engine near the hood strut mount. The a/c in my car quit and it was the ground that caused it to fail.
Would low freon make the AC light turn off though? I just read that it makes the passanger side hot and the driver side cold, not about the light turning off?
The temperature is reading correctly, it doesnt flash, it just turns off.
And if the fuse for the AC compressor would be bad, woudlnt it not work at all?
Ill look into the ground and fuse, how do I check if I have low freon?
I'm assuming you have the "Automatic" Climate Control system ....
It uses three inputs from sensors to decide how much A/C to deliver ...
1) Outside Air Temp sensor ... does the display show an outside temp that seems resonable ??
2) Inside Air Temp - the sensor is near where you insert the ignition key (small grill to right of key)
3) Sun load (Infrared) sensor ... looks like a small "dome" near your windshield inside the car (part of the defrost grill in the center of the dashboard).
Any of these sensors failing can affect the A/C.
In addition, there are cases where the PCM may request the A/C compressor OFF, such as high coolant temperatures, or the BCM senses low "freon" pressures.
I'd start by dumping the codes to see if there is a DTC that points you to the problem.
The outside temp is correct, i took off the cover off the inside temp probe but didnt see anything that would cause it not to work properly. Dont know about the dome, I will try to drive it some more and hopefully it throws a code, but after about an hr of driving yesterday and failed attempts at turning on the AC, the HVAC did not throw any codes. The light does not flash, it just turns off.
I have the same exact problem with my A/C and it pisses me off. Especially on a hot day. When it first started i thought the compressor was gonna break from turning on and off so many times so quickly. IT cant be good for it. A co worker of mine who also owns a C5 has the same problem. He says dont worry about it, and that nothings wrong witht the A/C. I say thats bull, theres no way this could be normal. HELP!!!

Instead of tacking on to a 7 year old thread, you should start a new one so you can get some fresh eyes reading about it. You still need Freon though.
I’m having the exact same issue with my 03 Z. Car came with no a/c but recently had compressor, condenser, receiver dryer, hvac door, replaced by a shop. I take it back to them for a recharge and it worked great but 20 minutes into my drive home and the a/c light just turned off and would not stay on. It’s now the next day and the a/c works fine again but after a short drive went back out similar to this tread. I checked all related fuses and relays and all are fine. I’m wondering what was the solution to this issue or where to start looking.
Welcome to the Forum !!…if you had to take it back to them for a recharge the system is likely leaking…did they leak check it before recharging ??…if not you should do that first !!…also best to start a NEW thread.
