My driver's side window has started displaying some strange behavior. It goes up and down the full range fine. It works perfect going up, but when I hit the down button it starts down for about an inch and then "slips" like it is free falling for a few inches and then continues down normally the rest of the way. Any ideas? Would this be covered by Extended GMPP?
that is pretty odd. sounds like a regulator problem to me but I'm not sure. They might not want to replace it cause like you said it goes up and down all the way. But it cant hurt to try.
It is more like a split-second "hesitation" after the first inch or two, then it catches up and proceeds down normally.
I am having the very same symptom in my 99FRC.
I took off driver's door panel and found out that there is a very nice sound insulation that is glued.
I did not want to rip it off until I would know how to fix that window problem.
Anyhow I found out that the cable that is connected to both lower corners of the window is very loose when window lifted up. It's not off from pulleys but almost.
That loosen cable makes the window to fall few inches until that cable tightens and kind of catches up.
Question is if it is possible to tighten that cable instead of buying new regulator?
Here's what you do: Remove the door panel and check the clamps that hold the window in place. I believe this takes a 12 or 13mm socket. If they're loose, you may want to consider a spring style lock washer to keep them tight in the future.
they will look like this:
Rear Clamp:
Front Clamp:
Make sure you don't move the window during this process or it will not line up properly with your seal resulting in a significant increase in wind noise. If you accidentally knock it out of place, you'll have to re-align it with a series of guess and checks by moving it, tightening and shuttin the door.
Great pictures, thanks to those it was very easy to check those bolts.
They were not loose.
Clamps seems to be a bit loose on those rails but I could not tighten those.
It seems that if I push the window outwards symptom goes away. If I let window go down without touching it then it will fall down 1-2" before catching up. Window sits very tight and I can not move up or down it without using regulator.
Does this mean that the system is worn out and needs to be replaced?
I dismantled the whole system and put it back "on tracks" again.
In 99 FRC I had metric 10 mm adjusting nut outside so it was really easy to do. Because I'm junior member I can not attach pictures, sorry about that.
Anyhow now window is better. It seems that the rails were in wrong angle and caused stress and friction to the mechanism. Now window goes much more smoothly up and especially down. Thought I found out that system is worn out and there is certain gap in rails and also in motor and gears.
Probably it needs to be replaced within near future.
Special Thanks to TheRadioFlyer for helpin me out.
Good info and pics. Guess I will have to tear into mine tomorrow and see what I can find as well.
Seems that this is a common problem. My 2000 drivers window acts up too. The pics will really help. Time to go out to the garage and jump in to this project.
anyone know why the window wouldnt roll down all the way when the doors shut? Ive been playing with it all day and cant seem to get it right.. any ideas? It sounds like its straining to go up when the door is shut and usually stops when going down, but no strain when the door is open..
wicked 98z: Remove the door panel and try to make the window go up/down with the door shut. Check for ubstructions that may be catching on the window when it's closed. I suspect it would be a loose wire in the front section behind the speaker plate.

Thanks. ill give that a try and see whats going on up front. Do u have any idea how far the back adjment needs to be? farther in or out?

sorry I don't have any idea. I just moved min until it fit. On some of the older cars, the weather stripping gets old and rigid so the seal isn't perfect. My window has to be a little tighter against the door in the rear to compensate. I still get wind noise because of the imperfection in the weather stripping.
