Default A/C not working; no codes

2003 Z06

When in AUTO mode the A/C button stays lit for about 1 second and then goes out and there is no cold air.

Defroster also does not blow cold air.

Checked the DIC: 99 - HVAC - no codes

Anyone? Anyone?

Check the ground cluster just forward of the radiator recovery tank on the right side frame rail. Mine quit the other day at it was a loose ground wire.

Check my post on AC help. I have the same issues. I was getting 361, and 441 codes. I did the actuator re-indexing that was mentioned by Jr_vette, and I was not getting any codes, but the system still didn't work. The car is in the shop, and I will know tomorrow, thursday what the problem is, so I will post what the answer was. Stay in touch, and wait a day or so.

Thanks - please do keep me updated. I checked again tonight after a short ride and I've still got no HVAC codes. I find that odd. I'm dropping mine off to my mechanic tomorrow evening so if you've got some feedback I can pass on to him I'd really appreciate it.

I see you are in Livingston. I work in Short Hills. Which dealer is yours at?

I had the same problems:The A.C. button stayed on 1-2 secs.,no hvac codes. I was low on 134 but could not get it to take a charge, after trying for 3-4 hours I disconnected the battery waited about 10 mins. then reconnected the battery started it up, pushed the A.C. button it stayed on,the compressor kicked in and it took the charge. Good Luck

Ok, it is fixed. This whole thing is a bit puzzling to me, but this is the process I went through. #1, I brought it to an STS service center where they fixed the AC on my Explorer. They added freon to the SUV, and it was fine. They did the same to the vette, and it still didn't work, and I was getting 361, and 441 codes for the HVAC #2, I did the actuator reindex posted by Jr_vette, and the AC still would not work ( went on for a few seconds, then went off) but at least it was not giving me 361, and 441 codes anymore. #3, I took it to Konner Chevrolet in Caldwell, and they said there were no codes, but there was hardly any freon in the system, so they thought I might have a leak. They evacuated the system, the vacuum was maintained, so they added freon with dye in it , and it held OK for the rest of the day. When I picked the car up after work at 5 PM, the AC worked fine.
To sum it all up, for some reason ,freon was lost from the system. The actuator on the left side was not working( code I was getting). The reindex process stopped the codes, and charging the system seems to have worked. Maybe it needed to be evacuated before refilling?Maybe the service center didn't do something right on the vette but did it right on the Explorer? As long as it works, it's OK with me now. The dealer charged $200 to do all the work, which seemed reasonable to me. He also said that there was a way to reindex the actuator WITHOUT taking it apart like I did. I didn't ask because it was already done. My car is an 03, which might be different from the years whcih Jr_vette refers to, which are 97 to 2000, I think. By the way, as Old Stingray did, I also disconnected the battery, and reconnected it, and tried everything. I also tried to "force" the actuator reset, by clearing the codes several times. Nothing worked until the dealer fixed the car.

Too weird! I have a sneaking suspicion your troubles are over.

The day I left Nashville for CI VIII, my AC quit. In Bowling Green, I took the car to a shop and had the freon recharged. AC still didn't work. The clutch fan wasn't engaging so the AC wasn't working. Turns out, there was a bad connector. The plastic housing on the connector had melted off and the connector backed out. Simply by forcing the connector back on, the AC started working again.

Scoob, if you're listening, check the connector on the passenger side, near the front of the block. It's a white connector.

Oh yeah, I was out of freon, so that wasn't a waste.

Interesting, and not all that different from the fix that worked for old stingray. I'm happy yours is working again. I'm going to pass the info from this thread on to my mechanic.

Bad news.I took the car out yesterday for a cruise, and guess what? The AC is not working again. It must be a leak somewhere. The AC light stays on, but it doesn't get the car cool. Back to the dealer.

Crud! Is it throwing any codes? Is the compressor coming on?

You said they put dye in there, right? Hopefully they'll be able to track down the leak. It must be a fairly big one to leak out so quickly.

I'm still going to give the info to my mechanic tomorrow and I'll have him do a good test for leaks, too.

There are no codes showing, and the AC light stays on. At one point, the AC was working on the passenger side and not the drivers side. When I shut the car off, and restarted it, nothing worked, just hot air coming out of the ducts.

Just got off the phone with my mechanic. The high side pressure switch is reading 441 psi. He'll replace that and I should be good to go.

Car is in the shop tomorrow, I'll suggest they check that. Got my fingers crossed.

Do you know if your compressor is coming on? Mine is not - but with the high side reading of 441 that's understandable. What I don't get is why no codes are being thrown.

In my experiences, if the light stays on, it has regrigerant in the system. One way to see if the compressor is indeed working is to grab the refrigerant lines that go into the firewall, the lower one should be very cold, and the upper one not quite as cold. I also use that method to add refridgerant to a refrigerant low system. If those lines are both cold and stil not getting cold air in the car, you know the actuators are not passing air through the evaporator in the cabin.
