My '98 C5 makes a growling or roaring sound from the rear of the car when going down the road. This is not the exhaust or tire noise. I can make the noise much louder by turning the wheel to the right. I am thinking the rear wheel bearings are bad. Let me know if there are any other ideas or things I should check. Has anyone changed out the rear hub or bearing on a C5?
Re: Help! C5 Growling Noise Any Ideas? (probable-cause)
Probably need the differential oil change........ or at least an anti-friction additive put in. I think there's a TSB or service advisory out on this one.

Don't go looking for trouble... I guarantee you it's the tires.
I had a rythmic rumble/ growl from the day I got the car out of the dealer showroom.
The tires all looked perfect, and balanced ok. But they were bad internally.

If the noise is at its worst going slow around tight corners, like in a parking lot, it sounds like the differential. You can try getting your dealer to deal with it under warranty or you can try Redline diff. fluid. For my noisy rear end, the Redline juice made the problem go away about 30-50 miles after changing it out. Some people say it won't stay fixed. I don't know, my dealer did replace the diff. due to the noise.
If the noise is worse at highway speeds, sounds like tires.
