My wife and I went to the "Hot Summer Nights" classic car show in beautiful Smithville, MO, last weekend. When we returned to our car, it was dark, so I didn't see it. But, when I went to the garage the next day, there it was. A definite key scratch (or similar sharp object) on the driver's side rear quarter. It runs from right behind and above the back tire all the way to the back edge. It's good I didn't see it happen, or I would be writing this from prison.
In my trama, I had a knee jerk reaction and washed the car, and then applied my GM touch up paint (electron blue). Now you can't see silver anymore, but it's still pretty obvious. Should I not have applied the touch up paint? Now that I have, is there anything I can do to improve the way it looks? I'm a pretty decent mechanic, but have ZERO paint/body experience beyond the simple wash and wax. Any simple tips would be appreciated.
Thanks.

use a little bit of paint thinner on a cotton ball or rag to even out the touch up paint. You should be able to do this without taking off any of the factory paint.
Egads! Hate to hear about this from anyone...let alone an '02 EB brother in my home area. I'll never understand how anyone could intentionally damage a Corvette.

sorry to hear that. take it to a body shop have them wet sand the area with 1000 grit sand paper. then 3000 grit paper. then buff it out. good luck.
Bummer You know, It just could have been some careless gal with a handbag that brushed up against the car sneeking past someone heading the other direction.
I'd rather think that then someone doing it on purpose. Still sucks either way.

Sucks, but I would hope that people who attend shows would be car enthusiasts not destroyers. Good luck with the fix.
Thanks for everyone's condolences. I too don't understand what would motivate a person to want to do such a thing. Jealousy? Pure spite? Who knows?
Anyway... I thought about contacting the insurance copmany, but decided that by the time I paid the deductible and any possible rate increase (I've heard American Family raises rates for almost any claim that's filed), I could have spent the money on having it repaired by a body shop. Anybody know of a good, reputable place in the KC area (preferably on the north side if possible) that you would trust to do a nice job, and not spend the day burning off my rubber?
I'd do the touch up myself, but people like that don't really deserve much respect. I also own a kute mustang, and that is the car I drive to work, but about a couple of months ago i found a pretty nasty 15" scrach above the fuel tank, for people at work probably envy the stang.
If only I could catch them. Black Cat firecrackers may not be fatal, but will be very painful depending where I place them on/in your body while I have you chained to a tree out in the river bottoms. Anyway... I digress....

Fellow KC EB brother here....
I have a similar scratch (~3" long) on the upper left of the rear bumper cover...same type of scenario...different car show. In my case only a repaint will truly fix it. Fortunately, in my case the EB touch-up paint did a very nice job of covering it up until I can have it fixed by a pro.

What are you paying the insurance company for? The only reason I can think of not to file it is if the damage is lower that your deductible. If they jack up your rates , fire them and go with another company. It would be different if you wrecked it or got tickets.
Eveland Brothers in Shawnee Mission does great work. They're the place where the local Porsche, BMW, Jag, and Range Rover dealers take thier cars. I've had great service from that shop. Not north, but def worth checking out.
