Gear Change/ 3.73 repack?
Is it possible to open up the stock MN6 rear end and rebuild it with a 3.73 gear set? Is the carrier compatible? I have seen lots of people tlking about replacing the whole dif. but I thought it was possible to regear one. IS it a totally different siez rear end? A gear set costs $200 plus the labor, much cheaper than $1600 to $2200 for a new 3.73 rear. Why won't this work?
As far as I know they're not available yet. Motive Gear lists them in their catalog in 3.42, 3.73, 3.90 and 4.10 ratios and has assigned part numbers but has no specifics yet. I dont think they are out.

I havn't found them specifically for the C5 rear that I know of, that is what seems to be the average price for many gear sets. My assumption was that SOMEONE would make them. If they truly are not available now, anyone know why NOBODY has made these yet?
Need to be thinking about who will set-up the new gears once you have them. Just had CARTEK do a complete rear change to 3.73s. Nothing underneath looks like rears of old. May have difficulty finding someone with the tools and know-how. Just my 2 cents and some words of caution.

Re: Gear Change/ 3.73 repack? (C-5 TECH)
The tools and expertise arent the problem. My whole familiy's in the car business so I have some dealership shops that I could have do the work. They are full shops and have all the tools to do this correctly if I cen determine if it can be done. What I am now curious about is are the gears available at all? From previous posts it seems they may not be.
Would a dealership that services a lot of c5's have the tools necessary to do this?
I'm thinking ahead in case Motive really makes the ring and pinion swap a reality. I really want 4.10, 3.73's just arent enough when there is 26.66" of tire.

Dealers have been replacing rears as apposed to repairing them because most have not received the specialty tools required.Up until now, replacement parts were not available. Also, the repair procedures in the service manual for the rear differential is totally incorrect...Any one planning on replacing gears will need to obtain technical service bulletin #01-04-20-001...It is a 10 page bulletin that has the correct repair procedures, pinion shim depth tables,a list of required Kent-Moore Tools, and some excellent set-up illustrations for the C-5 Getrag...
