Does the BCM keep track of total milage? There is a cluster posted on the for sale forum and it list the mileage when removed. I changed a cluster on a 96 and the same mileage reappeared with the new cluster. I was told at the dealership that the BCM kept up with mileage. Did GM change things on the C5? Thanks
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) ... basically the gauge panel ... keeps track of the odometer mileage in a C5. Even most dealers cannot change the reading as a Tech2 cannot alter this data in the IPC. Dealers and other shops have to send the units out to be "reset" by an "authorized" cluster repair center. The BCM does not track vehicle mileage on a C5.
So by replacing the cluster, mileage will be altered? That seems old school.
Yup ... so the "correct" answer is to have the "new" cluster sent to an "authorized" speedo shop and they can program in the "correct" mileage ... in other words, if your car has 46,749 miles showing on the current cluster, then the "new" cluster will show 46,749 when it comes back from the shop.
There are companies that repair/program the IPC such as ...
It may seem old school, but the auto makers realized that as they went to "electronic" odometers they needed to make it DIFFICULT to change the odometer. If it was easy, then over time none of us would trust the odometer reading in a car.
