Default 383 Stroker

Throwing the idea of putting one of these together this winter. What do you think I would gain? Or is it even worth it?

Currently I'm running:
Livernois Stage 2 heads
TSP long tubes
224/228 cam
underdrive pully
Fast 90
90mm throttle body
Vararam intake
3600 stall converter
3.42 rear end

Dynoed at 407RWHP

I've got one. And if I was to do it again, I would go the 402 route.

The power difference between a 383 and 402 seem to be in the same range as a 347 and 364 (ls1 and 2). If you are going ot use the old heads I woud say the difference will most likely be a little more peak and power under the curve with the 402 over the 383. If you are doing it yourself it adds up buying the new block and wiring stuff to use the 402.

I built my 383 as I wanted needed a new shortblock without breaking the bank, I was spending more than I wanted with just the extra crank and the blocks price was just more than I wanted to deal with at the time. Once I get a fast 90/90 setup and port it I hope to get in the 500-505whp range with ~465wtq. Not as good as the all out 402's, but it'a right up there with a little less torque.

If you were to build a 383 with the old heads I would go with a bigger cam and make sure the fast is or gets ported for a few extra hp.

Was really not looking to buy a new short block or heads, just looking for a few more ponies out of the existing set up.

With the added displacement, what kind of gains do you think I would be able get - 40 - 50 RWHP, or more? I don't know if this is a good option for the money invested. The car is more of a weekend toy/street car, not so much a track car of any kind.

Thanks for your input.

I had my 383 built because of the necessity for a new engine. (Thought I might as well do something different if I needed to do something that drastic.)

Reused some of the parts from the old engine such as the intake and my ported/polished LS1 heads. Went with a used LS6 block vice a new/used LS1 block or a LS2 block (which was just becoming available at the time...installs were a bit more expensive via that route and the build process was just starting to mature.) Sounds like you have a pretty sweet setup as it is WRT parts.

If you're dead set on 383 or 402 in this day and age and you need/want a new block, I'd go with the LS2/402. If you just want to change things up a bit, I'd go with a different cam, rockers, valve springs and a dyno tune. That's probably your best bang for the buck at this point.

Do I like my 383? Yes. Would I do a full 383 again if I was in the same situation as before? Probably not. I'd drop in a stock/crate LS2 or LS6 with a slightly different cam.

Have fun with it!
