So I wanted to take my car to UPS to return some car parts. I start her up in the garage and said damn this car sounds good. I put it in gear and start the car up, and the wheel isnt turning. The first thing I thought was didnt I just start thecar and begin to back up. Why is the column acting like it's not running. I realize it is running and the column is locked. I looked at the DIC and see the dredded service column lock, pull key and wait ten seconds. I turn the car on and off a couple times to see if that unlocks it, and it doesnt.
Then I thought, I had the recall done four years ago ( but im not sure )
I did get the notice about six months ago from GM like the rest of you but the car had not demonstrated any issues.
I guess Ill read the sticky and see what options I have.
I was going to instal my FAST 90/90 this weekend, but I guessIll crawl under the stering column and see what I can break under there.

GM
You need to get a CLB (Column Lock Blocker) The GM fix is bogus.
Earlier, the car started fine three times, but the lock would not unlock.
I went into the garage, hooked up the battery charger, and tried it again. I twisted the wheel hard a couple times in both directions. Tried it and it did not unlock. The DIC said pull the key for ten seconds, so I did and like magic it unlocked and I drove around for a half hour.
The battery DIC said I was pushing out between 13.2- 13.6 volts with the lights on.
Im going to order the thunder CLB now....................update..... I just bought it from thunder
Lets see what tomorrow has in store. I dusted off the sledge hammer and kissed it just for fun in front of the car
Bill, It was a pleasure talking to you !!!

It does make you a bit peeved doesn't it? Mine locked up Wednesday night....I didn't say any swear words or go kick the dogs, but I seemed to go through a lot of cigarettes this week....
I had the standard GM fix mid 2003 after car was bought. Didn't have a problem then with it but GM did the fix when car was in for warranty work without even asking me about it before hand. Never had a problem since then in 34K miles and never expect to.

Got the 'latest' version of the GM fix about 2yrs ago (the locking plate is removed along with the reprogram now). Not a problem since. Oh, and I got the 'code' while waiting on my CLB from Corvettes of Houston. I still have it if anyone wants it. Unopened. How 'bout $40 and I'll even cover the freight? PM me if anyone's interested.
Damn bug showed up again today when I started it. It gave me the lock notice on the DIC and asked to pull the key for ten seconds. I did and it started and released the wheel.
My battery showed 11.6v as it was starting, then 13.5v while running.
I took the car for a nic drive pulled it into the garage nice and straight just in case I have to have it towed next time
I guess Ill be installing the CLB instead of the FAST90 next week
I had my column lock up on me a couple of weeks back. Charging the battery, jerking the wheel, etc did nothing. I had to take the shroud off off the steering column and bang on the lock mechanism with a ratchet (all I had in the car at the time) to get it to release. After it released, I disconnected it. Since I've never had the recall done (fuel shutoff), I drove it like this until today when I installed a CLB from Adaptive Performance ($35). Now I'm good to go, no more "Service Column Lock"!
I just installed the CLB from thunder. It took about 35 minutes. The
LS1howto.com made it easy.
Looks like it worked although interesting enough, before I pulled the pull on fuse 25, the steering did not lock when I turned the key on, but I wasnt going to push my luck.
an old thread but I have the same old problem....after the GM "fix". Sat in the 100 degree S.Cal heat today swearing like a sailor. Luckily, the column lock released and I was able to get it home. Just ordered my Thunder CLB.

Wish you the best of luck..............I had the dealer recall performed, column lock removed, K Harness installed, and within 500 miles, got the remove key wait 10 seconds, message and then a few days later, got the column lock message and my '00 A4 Coupe would shut off if I went over 2 mph, even though the steering column was not locked!
I removed the GM recall installed K Harness, and the car ran fine, ordered the CLB from Thunder Racing, and installed it a week later, and have had no problem since, over two years ago.
