Default Should I get a 'bigger' cam??

I like the cam I have in my '99 MN6 very much. It is the Futral F-13 (230/232). But after having it in the car for a few years, I am now thinking.....of course....I want MORE!! I guess I am wondering if a bigger cam will give me significant hp gains. I want to avoid flycutting and an wondering how big of a cam I can get W/O flycutting or if its even worth it. I would like to get 450rwhp!

Current Mods-
Vararam
Ported LS2 TB
FAST 90
Futral F-13 cam
Texas Speed stage II P/P LS6 heads
Long tubes
Cat removal
Magna flow exhaust
3.73 rear
422rwhp/380ft lbs

If you do a set of TFS 215 Heads you will more than likely get what you want with your current cam!

I watched as a set of Patriot LS6 Heads were removed in favor of a set of new TFS 215's and it went fom 413 RWHP to 443 RWHP, these heads are awesome.

It might be what you want

Thanks,Matt

How do you use the car? 1/4 mile track or street warrior? If it is a street car, any more cam will hurt low end on a 346cid motor. If it's a 1/4 mile track car, step up to a g5x-3 or something similar.

First off I'd say your numbers look a little low. Check the tuning first. I would think an F13/90/90 setup should be closer to 440/405 to begin with.

I thought that the numbers were low too!! I was very disappointed after all the installs that I only came up with 422rwhp. I am not sure what to check on the tune. The car runs and idles great. The 'Tuner' claims that he got her "Dialed in".
I guess I just took the tune for granted. I assumed that a car is either tuned or not. Can an experienced tuner switch things around and make dramatic gains over another tuner? I was of the opinion that 'IT IS WHAT IT IS' and that I would have to change parts to find more hp.....

Unless the tune is totally hosed, I can't imagine you would get much more if any from the tune. My tuner showed me some of the things that people always speak about, for instance 13:1 AFR. When he leaned mine to 13:1 it made about 2 more hp. He keeps mine at a richer AFR on the dyno realizing it will lean some on the street, i.e., safer tune. As for timing, he brings it up to just under knock retard, where do you do from there? I also think there are some real "ringer" dyno's out there, we seem to consistently see huge numbers yet when other try to duplicate the numbers/setup they fall short, really makes me wonder as the dyno can be "fooled", its just a measurement tool.

So without getting too hung up on numbers, the two areas that I would look at are the FAST and the heads. As a systematic approach, it might be worth porting the FAST (contact Tony Mamo for this) to see how it responds, from there if still not satisfied I would look to the AFR 205's. Bump the compression up as well when you do this. Talk to Tony about the heads as well.

He's running stg.2 TSP heads with bigger valves, clearance will be an issue espeically if they milled the heads.

FWIW, I went from TSP PRC stg.1 LS6 heads/LS6 intake to 59cc TFS 215s/Ported FAST 90/LS2 TB, everything else being the same I went from 430rwhp to 470rwhp with a retune. And assuming the typical gain of 10-15rwhp from a Fast 90, I gained 25-30rwhp alone from TFS heads over AFTERMARKET P/P LS6 heads.

Better heads will solve your problem, IMO. Look into the TFS 215s, you can run alot of compression without flycutting cause of the 13.5* valve angle. I ran 236/242 on 113 for a bit with those heads at 59cc without flycutting with lots of room to spare.
