15,000 miles on the car, dont flame me because I havent even checked the wear indicators but I have heard that the front brakes squeak on corvettes....Any Ideas????
Zach
If they are the OEM pads ... they don't usually squeak unless they are down to the wear indicators. Performance pads like Hawk HP+ will squeak when cold. Once they are "hot" they will stop squealing.
I have the same problem with rear brake pads squeaking. They are hawk pads, and they do not squeak when cold but do when they are hot. I bought stock pads for replacement (gmpartshouse.com). Have yet to install them tho.
if the front brakes are squeaking, and its not the wear indicators, its probably not the pads either if they are GM. The Factory GM pads usually dnt squeak. Get your rotors cut. I had the same prblem with my 11,200mi. Z and it went away when i cut the rotors.
You are probably out of the warranty period so I don't know if this can help you - my brakes squealed badly and I had exceessive brake dust. My chevy service department found document id #1369777 - if you are "extremely disatisfied", they are supposed to replace your pads for free. This is supposed to be good for 02-04 Z06's. Worked for me for about a year and now the squeal is startling to come back a little bit.
I couldn't take the squealing on mine, so I changed out all the rotos and put ceramic pads on it. No more squealing. You might consider replacing the noise abatement springs on the calipers.

Which Hawk pads do you have ??? HP Street (HPS) or maybe HP Plus (HP+) ??? My guess (and it is a guess) is that you are seeing the following ....
The HPS pads are a semi-metalic compound and are formulated to work best when they are "warm". Once they are up to temperature they provide a lot of brake torque. If cold, or overly hot, they have less ability to brake.
What you may be seeing if you are braking "gently" is the front pads have warmed up and are doing most/all of your braking, while the rear pads are doing almost no braking (squeaking) ... try this ....
Find a safe place and accelerate the car to about 50 MPH and then haul the car down with moderate to heavy brake pedal pressure to a few miles per hour - then release the brake and accelerate to about 50 mph and then brake again... do this about 3 to 4 times in a row and then drive (no brakes) for a couple of minutes.
