Went out to the FLAPS today to see what was available. No Redline anywhere. They carry the water wetter, but no gear oil. Anyways, one of the FLAPS has Lucas 75w-90 at $15 per quart. The RP was about $12 per quart. I tried searching for Lucas reviews, but none to be found. I wonder how good this stuff is seeing how it's $15 per quart. And sometimes you get what you pay for. Anyone try this stuff?
Also, went to a local racing store (heard they might carry the Redline gear oil, but no dice) and asked him what he thought about all the gear oil products (Amsoil, RP, Redline, Lucas, etc.). He said they did some testing and seemed that all of the non-GM gear oils tended to heat up faster and hold heat longer. Isn't the object to keep things lubricated and cool in diff? I mean the hotter it gets, the more the fluid breaks down, right? Though he said if it were him, he would stick with GM gear oil and additive.
Sounds suspicious to me. In my opinion, you are going to see exactly the opposite - lower friction and lower temps with higher quality aftermarket fluids like AMSOIL and Redline.
The AMSOIL Severe Gear Extreme Pressure Synthetic 75w90, even shipped, is priced under the Lucas and about the same as the Royal Purple. Been using it in my Z06 without any failures (other than the common left axle seal) for several years now.
That doesn't sound right to me either. I've been using 75/90 Redline in both my vert and Z for some time and there have been no problems. I switched to Redline after seeing the difference in heat it made in my tow vehicles differential temperatures. It made over 150 deg difference in the differential of a 1Ton Powerstroke towing 12K over mountain passes.
