I am wondering how hard it is to have a cylinder liner replaced, and is it cost effective?? Also, what are my chances that the block is also cracked...?? Any input will help me GREATLY!
The cylinder liners are cast in place. There are a few folks who have figured out how to do this, but it is not something your "avarage" engine shop can do. Here's a link to one shop that has figured it out ....
As far as the question about a cracked block ... the only "difinitive" answer will be when the heads come off and you can see if you are dealing with "just" a blown head gasket, or a cracked block. The external symptoms (unless it is a catastrophic failure) are pretty much the same for a blown gasket or a cracked block.

Well the head is off, and I can see the crack in the liner, going vertical about 5 inches.......should I replace the liner or buy a new engine?
Unless you want to do an overbore like the article I linked to talks about, I would think the cost of (and reliability issues) of re-lining with a stock size is wasted money. Hold this post open a little longer, or maybe PM someone like EnglandGreen for their opinion. In my book, I'd be shopping for a new engine ... mind as well consider going with an LS6 .... or look at other "performance" options available to you. Maybe it would help to post in your "regional" forum and get opinions more local to you as to who does good engine work.
Good luck, that sounds ugly ..... 5 inch crack ... ouch!!!
Actually, I'm doing a 403. I can tell you that Lingenfelter said they would do it for $350, but add shipping on it both ways and your above $500. Then you have to hone and size the cylinder, and put a new piston, rod, pin, and rings, a new crank bearing, and balance it... It's a lot of work. I might do it if I can find a piston assembly cheap and someone locally, that's my only option. It's a shame, really, the engine onlyhad 30k miles on it. On another board someone found a shop locally that would do it for $150 plus the sleeve.
I don't know if it would be any different than an Acura aluminum block but we had the cylinders cut out of everyblock we built and fitted with some nice iron sleeves pressure tested to 60psi (we ran 35psi with 10.5:1 compression with no problems just to prove you can run high compression and alot of boost with the right tuning and enough fuel)
We used a place called Golden Eagle. I would need to look them up again and see what all engines they do. I pretty much got out of the Honda scene a few years ago but would still help friends build the engines.
Hey guys, can I bump it to a 402 and still use my vortech s/c setup? What all is involved with that...just the bore size??
Dustin
The 402 is an LS2 that is stroked to 4". The LS2 uses LS6 heads without sodium filled exhaust valves. Your Vortech should be very happy to mate with that. Just get it built with the proper forging and compression ratio.

Thanks for the props. I agree, relining is a waste of money.
