I had the zip tie mod for a little while (I used large rubber bands)and I did not notice any real change in noise, I was actually hoping for a little more. Now I have something close to what "comecorrect" is talking about, since the zip tie mod does not use the air lid I found the intake wanted to move around a little so I prefer changing the air lid to meet my needs but keeping it to control the motion of the intake.
Long story short no real change in noise, if anything a slight increase at WOT.
You did not list your car's year in your profile. Hard to help you without knowing info. Early year 1997-1999 (maybe 2000) C5's have terrible air filter tops, they breath thru 3/4 inch "straws". I put on a 2002 Z06 air filter top, well worth it.
Later year C5's have a better system, including a small slot on the front of the top (see bottom picture above).
You should hear a lot more noise, it is also way overkill, it wont contribute anything to your bottom line.
I'm not looking for a lot of power out of it...I just went from a mustang to a corvette (90hp difference) so that is enough for now. I just want a little more noise until I get a real intake and exhaust.
I did the mod on my 97. I have to disagree as I noticed a bit more noise and a bit more power. Keep in mind,I have a 97 and they had a very restricted lid.
You may want to do a hood seal now. If water is sucked into the intake, Bye Bye. If I did a mod it would be the swiss cheese mod, not the zip tie. To much can go wrong with the zip tie.

This is a "Placebo Mod". Unless you have real heavy mods like heads/large cam, there is no restriction with the factory units, they flow pretty well.

Where did you get that weather stripping to do that?

Autozone $14. Bulb type weather stripping. It has a stick and peal backing. Just clean off the area with rubbing alcohol, measure the length and stick it on.
Not only does it stop water from coming in, it keeps the engine bay cleaner. The C6s have them from the factory, so that alone should tell you something.
It comes in a bag, enough for 2 cars. It is the same seal that the Corvette taxers get $40. for one.
8 rwhp is what I got from the dyno after the zip tie mod.. The factory air box is very very restrictive.. The flip tie mod is worth another additional 5-7 rwhp also.. Well worth the effort
I have seen dynos change 15 RWHP in just a few pulls. It is not worth the zip-tie coming off and sucking dirt into the engine. Also when it rains the water will get sucked into the crack at the hood.
Get a Z06 cover if you are looking to let in more air.
I never understood the point in doing the "zip tie mod". If you want more hp, just buy a real intake. Your driving a corvette, not a civic, do it right.
If there was no problem with the earlier lids, why did they change to a less restrictive one on later models.I can assure you I DID THE ZIP TIE MOD RIGHT.IT GAVE ME A BIT MORE NOISE AND A BIT MORE POWER!!! For free. Now that I added my $365 Hooker cat back, I'm a pretty happy guy.Thrifty isn't bad. If all Vette owners had the "pay through the nose,or it's not right" attitude, the dealers would charge $300 for an oil change.Oh wait, they already do.
I decided against the flip tie/zip tie mod. Just installed a Blackwing. Like someone else mentioned, I don't think there is much of a difference until you are pushing 400hp. The air intake demands just aren't that high with a stock motor. Still, I can tell you that my engine absolutely ROARS to life now at w.o.t. (since installing the Blackwing). Very slight sotp difference, but probably nothing measureable. Exhaust is on it's way. Probably wont realize any significant benefit until headers are installed.
I made the change because of advice I received from my cousin (a career mechanic who works on LS1 motors). More air-in + less restrictive exhaust = better throttle response throughout the rpm range (probably will not result in substantial hp increase). Made sense to me.
