I left my house, came to a intersection and was waiting for the light for 2 minutes to change. Well, the light changed and i gave it a little gas AND the car sputtered and kind of sounded like it was missing at the same time. It barely made it over to the side of the road. I started it back up a few times and no change. The last few times i tried - it wouldnt start at all. This is NOT a reduced engine power problem.
The codes i pulled do not have anything to do w/ this problem.
These codes were on the car befor this happened
P0113
P1111
B0432
P1571
P1631
C2120
So, I think it is fuel pump related... What do you guys think ?
And is there a way to check the pump without aguage ? i dont have one available now
I would check the fuel pressure. Just hook up a gauge at the fuel line or you can just press in the schrader (sp?) valve with a cloth and screw driver to see if fuel is coming out. Make sure to wear safety glasses. I would also sit in the car and turn the key to the on position and listen for the fuel pump to start up. It should be a light hum.
Yeah, sort of sounds like a fuel delivery issue, especially with the car sputtering to the side of the road and eventually not running at all. It actually takes a little longer than one might think at cruise/idle to drain the pressurized line and rails of fuel, or at least to drop pressure enough to the point the car won't run.
I agree that the first and easiest diagnostic step would be to hook up a fuel pressure gauge and see what it says. If you're adventurous and have a rag handy you could also just depress the schrader valve in the rail port. If the problem is fuel delivery related it will just drizzel out. If you get a high pressure stream you know your pump is moving fuel fine.
The fuel just dribbled out. There was a hum for 2 seconds coming from the pump or it could have been from the r/s pump.
So, I guess my 122,000 mile pump just gave out !!
Thanks for the help......

No problem.
For what it's worth the entire assembly from GM is actually more expensive than buying an LPE pump/assembly. When my OEM pump died in another car I ended up just swapping in the LPE pump for this reason.
Oh, be sure to check the basics (fuses, wiring, etc.) before actually buying or swapping the pump.

The right side pump is not electric, if you heard a hum/buzzing noise for 2 seconds after turning the ignition on then it was the left side pump energizing.
Pressing the schrader valve is not a real scientific method of checking the pressure, you could have 15-20 psi of fuel pressure and the car will not run but it will look like alot of pressure if you just open the schraeder valve, on the other hand if you say the fuel is just dribbling out then you have 0 fuel pressure.

Actually, the car WILL run on 15-20psi of pressure. Mind you at this pressure it will barely idle, but it will idle.
Obviously observing the fuel coming out of the Schrader is not a scientific way to measure pressure, but based on his description of how the car shut down I was guessing he was down to less than 10psi of pressure. This would be obvious by checking the Schrader and would only take him around 30 seconds.
Anyhow, sounds like the "depress the Schrader" method helped him quickly identify that he has a fuel delivery issue of some sort, most likely the pump.
FOUND THE PROBLEM !! Believe it or not - it was out of gas !!
I decided to try adding 2 gallons of gas this morning. It started right up !! I ran it around on the street for 5 minutes w/ some full throttle. No problem.
So my sending unit must be sticking. At least the pump is still working.
I take pride saying that i have the fastest 97 A4 stock motor and fuel system running 10's ( i still have not installed my BAP ).
Long live my 122,000 mile stock fuel pump............

Got to love that damn fuel gauge sending unit, I have ran out of gas 3 times, 2 of the times were on the interstate and I happend to roll right into a gas station but I wasent so lucky the 3rd time. When I read 1/8 of a tank that means I am empty
