Default Long term strorage question

Hopefully an easy question for you, but I need your help:

I'm now home on leave for two weeks after being in Afghanistan for 6 months. My wife didn't drive the car and the battery was dead. I charged it back up and enjoyed driving it after touring around in HMVEES for so long!

I purchased a Battery Tender that automatically senses when the battery needs a charge. My question is the car cover - is it OK to close the hood most of the way and cover the car for the next 6 months while I'm back in Afghanistan? Will there be a build up of gases that I should be concerned about under the cover?

Thanks for your help, Gordon

For that length of time, if the car is going to sit, I would take out the battery and store it in a safe place (in the basement?) hooked up to the battery tender. Before removing the battery be sure that you know the Delco radio security code. Look in the owner’s manual.

Other than the memory for the seats, etc, only the keyless entry fobs will need to be re-synced – just hold down the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously until the horn beeps (about 10 seconds).

Thank you AND your family for serving our country.

When I went to Iraq I disconnected my battery and left it in the car. When I came home on mid-tour leave hooked up the battery and the car started right up. I didn't have to know the security code. Mine was fine.

Unhook the battery and it'll be fine

Make sure the car is clean before the cover goes on. Even slight shifting of the cover can cause swirls if there's dust on it.

There's a Tech Tip on how to unlock the radio if you dont have the code.

Best of luck in AFG

Guys - thanks for the inputs! I'll be back on CF in April.

i've changed out the battery tons of times in my car and never had an issue with the radio or needed a code.
