Default ? for those upgrading to LS2 timing chain

Are you guys replacing the gears at the same time, or just the chain?

I have a 99 LS1 that I'm getting ready to put a new cam in. I've got a new chain, and need to know if the timing gears are typically changed.

Normally, you reuse your stock sprockets...but inspect them for wear and replace if need be. I only replaced the chain in mine.

The LS2 chain is the factory replacement chain for all LSx engines, so there is no difference in the sprockets.

I also did not change my sprokets. Like Y2kvert4me said just check for wear or damage to them.

Anyone notice if there's a PN on the chain somewhere?

I have only heard of one breaking, and the circumstances were suspicious. It is much heavier than the LS1.

I also just changed just the chain. Been about 8,000 miles and no problems.

Lower chain is LS2, much thicker links.

To order the LS2 chain use #12586482 Check with Gene at GM Parts House. I think he was getting $35.99 for it.

Been told by mechanic that double roller robs 5 h.p. Hopefully someone else who knows for sure will chime in and verify this.

It has to cost some hp...

Adding weight, and doubling the frictional contact area to any driven component certainly won't add power.

5hp may be a stretch, but for sure a single chain is less of a parasitic drain than a dual chain.

During a cam swap do we need to replace the stock LS6 chain for the LS2 chain> I went with the G5X3 cam and reused the stocl LS6 chain. My installer never asked me to go with the LS2 chain.

No you don't NEED to, but it's a cheap item and while the car is apart, many of us have done so. The higher the mileage, the more its recommended.

I installed my cam this past January w/ 70k on my LS6. The cam sprockets were fine. I went w/ the LS2 chain because it's stronger, cheap, and a direct replacement.

The way I look at it is if my LS6 chain made it 70k w/ lots of high rpm HPDE use, and the LS2 chain is even stronger, I have no need for the double roller, more parts, shimming the oil pump etc.

LS2 vs. LS6

I tore back in to mine last week to swap in the LS2 chain. When I done the cam swap last winter I noticed that the stock chain had some slack but to my surprise the LS2 had just as much when I swapped it out.
