There is a fabric/fuzz metal guide in there if I recall. All it takes is the fuzz to wear off and/or rocks to get wedged in there and you get a nice scratch. Tints seem to make the issue worse. Anyone know if you can polish glass to remove the scratches?

Even a very close inspection with a magnifying glass didn't reveal whatever caused the side glass scratches on our C3 - even after the felt strip was removed. A new one was installed as a precaution. I personally think it is often tiny pieces of quartz rock, or the like, that do this damage and not ordinary sand and dirt. Also, on some cars, the fasteners can rub on the glass when the felt wears down enough. It is practically impossible to remove these scratches.
If it is on the inside, the clearance between the glass and the regulator assembly guides is very close. I noticed when I replaced mine that without the inside door panel on, the glass actually would rub on the rails, so if the inside panel does not keep the glass in position it could scratch the glass.
