I cant figure out why my 02 is running hot. I have flushed and filled the system, and it runs a steady 220 when parked. Two weeks ago, it was 180-190. I flushed the system trying to cure, but didnt work. Also, when vehicle sits still, the fans wont turn on unless the A/C is on. Could this be a temp sensor or a relay? How do I know for sure before replacing?
Nope, running normal. If you run your A/C the fans will come on at a lower temp, if not they will not come on until near 228 F. They go into high speed at like 235 F. Over heating is like 260.
You may have been running with the AC on to get under 200F, 180 to 190 sounds like you were on the highway. The thermostat is set to 190, so the min temp when warmed up is around 190.
You should clean the radiator and AC condenser occasionally they will get dirt and trash in there and will cause your temps to go up. Use compressed air or a hose and blow from the inside towards the front of the car. If you feel up to it remove some of the shrouds to get a better shot at it.
I cleaned out the area around the radiator and condenser when I flushed the system. Is dropping the temp to activate the fans worth my effort and cost of buying a programmer?
A lot of peole swear by lowing temps, I'm not sold. You WILL have more hydro carbos (unburned gas) emissions, and a little lower milage. I just raised my fans and went back to stock thermostat, did not notice a change in power, but was able to pass the state emission test here.
IMO these engines were designed to run hotter than most people are use to, but it does not mean its a problem. If you go above 240 F, then start looking for issues.
I may go back to the lower temp thermostat next summer when I'm road racing as it may help me keep it in the normal range longer, but not for anything else...
