Default Headlights issue

I'm sorry if this is a repeat, I looked, and did not find the answer. On my 2001, every once in a while the headlights don't pop up. Even if I hit the switch, they don't pop up. But, if I turn the car off and restart the engine, then they work. Any ideas??

Usually it is the gears on the inside.

If both headlights are being affected, there is normally only two possibilities. The headlamp switch has or is going bad or the second possibility is the headlamp controller which is what actually raises or lowers them. One possible way to figure this out is when this happens and the headlamps are down, are they turned on? If they are not on and down, then replace the headlamp multifunction switch on the column. If they are on but down, replace the headlamp controller.
If they are partially opening, partially closing or their motors try to keep running and so on, they its normally the gears.

great advice

The other possibility is the hazard switch. Its in the headlights circuit and if it goes bad it can cause gremlins. When you have the problem give it a good old reclycle a few times. If the problem improves you may have the culprit.

thanks for all the advice. I never checked to see if the lights were on while down.
