Hey guys, I have a vararam installed and have cleaned it four times. Two of the times I take it out, I find the foam around the filter is not sticking and I have to glue it back in place. I'm thinking I have three options:
1. Talked to vararam and they want $59.99 + $10 for shipping for a new filter ... I'm a little hesitant to go this route as it looks like some people have had fitment issues with the new filter?
2. Upgrade to a Callaway Honker ... more money, but I definitely haven't seen as many problems with it.
3. DIY and get some supplies at Home Depot and refoam the edges of the filter.
I'm leaning towards #3, especially since I can do the other 2 if it doesn't work out. I wanted to see what people's opinion were of the new filter though and the Vararam system vs. the Honker.
Is the filter they are selling you a K&N (or K&N type) as opposed to the “foam” filter that was standard on older units? The K&N would be far superior to the foam variety.
I understand that the fitment issues were the result of the design of the older housing and not the filter itself. That issue has been addressed. I have the older unit and I make due with it. Contact Vararam for clarification as I may have the facts of the fitment issue wrong. Vararam is a supporting sponsor of this forum.
I rebuilt my entire “foam” filter by reusing only the stiff support screen. I purchased air conditioner filter foam sheets (for window units) for use as the main filtering surface and generic foam for the boarders. I am going to pick up the “K&N” soon and give it a try.
However I would recommend the K&N for better filtering and good flow. Oil both types.
As far as I know, Vararam is the only intake filtering system to give proven gains on the drag strip. That’s enough reason for me to use it.
I went from Vararam to Honker, the filter was the sole reason. You are where I was last year. Try doing an oil analysis, I think you will find out that foam isn't the answer.
The foam filters have not been suuplied with the C5 units for over two years now. The new "gray " filter is manufactured specifically for the C5 -VR-B2 unit. It is a flat panel cotton gauze filter - washable/reusable and guaranteed for 80K miles!!!
Just to be clear, my point in the prior post was foam from Home Depot isn't the answer. If you are keeping the Vararam, spend the money and buy a new and correct filter for it.
