A4 Shift Cable Problem
After running some errands the other night, I returned home and pulled in the garage. When I attempted to shift into Park, there was no resistance on the shifter and it wouldn't shift the gears. I was pretty sure I had a broken shift cable after researching it on the forum. I removed the console and looked underneath the shifter where the cable attaches...it was fine. So, I jacked the car up this morning and noticed that the cable was disconnected from the shift lever on the transmission itself. But, upon further inspection I realized that the grommet that snaps onto the transmission shift lever was missing, so I went to the dealer and bought a new cable. It looks like the hard rubber grommet on the new cable might be able to be removed and inserted in the old cable, but I don't want to ruin the new $100 cable. On the other hand, I would rather not go through all the trouble of replacing the entire cable since it is not broken. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this? Can the grommet be removed from the new cable without damaging it?
Here is a pic of the cable end that connects to the tranny. The round white grommet that I am missing is in center eyelet of the end piece:

I just went thru this---had my trans rebulit --Took it out myself and walked it into the tranny shop--I lost the little clip or grommet and when I re-installed the tranny it would not shift properly into the gears --was sloppy loose and didn't line up--Called the tranny shop and they told me i probably lost that clip--happens all the time---they had them in-stock--i bought one --snapped it in and it worked perfect----
