Default Bad Wheel Bearing???

Well... a couple of weeks ago I posted up about a whine coming from the rear of my car. Thought it was the tranny, but after listening more and more it is defiently coming from the rear of the car on the right side. Could this possibly be the wheel bearing?

I did a search and found info only on front wheel bearings.

Once again I am getting a somewhat low rumble like a loud tire from the rear of the car, only at 55-65mph, doen't matter if it is 4th,5th,or 6th gear. Same speed each time. I also wondered if it is just the tires, but I have had them on for quite awhile now and they never made any noise before.

I had the same problem with a left front, and there was no wobble when I jacked it up and torqued on it,like you would expect from a bad bearing. But, when I spun it, instead of beeing smooth, Jack it sounded like a skateboard wheel. Replaced the hub and all's fine now.

does the sound change when you steer L or R? usually it's a bad bearing; Timken/Auto Zone, $160

Since it's only happening in a very small speed range, I'm going to go with the tire(s). If you are certain it's happening only on one side, then try swapping the rear tires left to right. Don't worry about the directional arrows, the tires won't explode, shred, or rise up and strangle you because the arrows are pointing backwards.

If the noise changes sides then the problems with the tires. If it stays, you know the tires aren't the issue.

Now, if you're NOT sure the sound is coming from one side only, then don't bother.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

Kumho Escta ASX...most likely the tires at this point.... did some hard turning with no one around, windows up, radio off, and the noise was not even present until I hit the 55-65mph range...

i am thinking that it is just the way the tire is worn now cause I know that they are just about done and I was planning on replacing them in the spring.

just really had me worried that the tranny or rear was goin out...

C5Kid - I am kind of in the same boat. After my recent header install, I noticed some rumbling noise coming on during right hand sweepers at around 40 - 60 mph. I still have not figured it out but my noise seems to be disappearing. Changed the rear diff fluid to syn and I have done a lot of driving around since then. Noise was still there. Did a lot of research on bearing noise. Something to keep in mind is that if you hear the noise while turning right, the left wheel bearing is the likely culprit since the left wheels are loading up in a right hand turn while the right wheels unload. Jack the car up and check the left rear wheel bearing for noise and free play. Good luck with it.
