I am planning to flush my coolant this weekend, because it is starting to turn brown. I noticed that the Themostat is sold with the housing. Does anyone know why they sell you the whole piece and could you just find a thermostat by itself?
With that, do I even have to change the thermostat?
Check with the dealer which thermostat you need. The early C5's, like my 98 had the thermostat attached to the housing. Originally they gave me the wrong one (without the housing) so I think later cars did not require the assembly. I'm not sure what year the change occurred.
I believe it's good practice to replace the thermostat. I put a new one in my 98 a few months ago. While I had the old and new one side by side I threw them in a pot of water and turned on the heat. The new one opened faster and wider then the eight year old one.
The 1997-2003 LSx engines used the thermostat that was part of the housing. The 2004 & up stats are separate from the housing. I use a 160 Hypertech stat, and lowered my fan on temps. It really makes a difference in the operating temp (172-178*F). Every reputable tuner includes a 160*F stat with a head/cam package.
