We are all too aware that our C5s have very little storage room. A few documents and road maps will quickly fill the glove box, and the shallow center console is no big help.
A partial, and nice-looking, addition can be found in a BMW. My son drives an BMW M Roadster. (He wanted to be sure that I mention the "M" designation of his Roadster, ‘cause he is secretly in awe of my C5.)
BMW installs good-looking storage nets onto the sides of the “leg tunnels” - for the lack of more descriptive nomenclature. The utility of these handy nets - driver’s and passenger side - is self evident.
They came with the iron frame contoured to fit their intended application. It is very easy, however, to reconfigure the slight bends to fit our purposes. Also, I was shipped two units intended for the same side, but it’s easy to turn around the “buttons” on top of one net, so that they too face outward. Do not forget the 4 mounting brackets for each net. They are sold individually and come at a very nominal cost.
Thanks for the tip. What do the mounting clips attach to? Does it require drilling or some other "permanent" modification?
Hi,
The mounting clips are held in place by appropriate screws (with a black coating on the head, so they blend in - I think they come with the clips). “Permanent modification” involves four small holes drilled into whatever metal/plastic is behind the carpet. I can’t guess why one would ever want to remove these nets, but if one did, I guess one would have to hunt around for the small holes left hidden in the carpet knap. I’m absolutely against making irreversible (appearance) changes from stock, but I didn’t have a moment’s pause about making this mod. As a matter of fact, I had friends at a body shop do it for me, (because I’m too lazy, and I wanted it done absolutely perfect). The result is an OEM appearance.
As an option, Mid-America is selling leather pouches that do the same thing as the BMW net pouches. They are not particularly cheap but then nothing Corvette ever is. The pouches are designed for the C5 and C6 interiors and come color matched to the car.
