oz700 clutch questions....
just had the textralia OZ700 clutch installed and i know alot of people say the chatter alittle but i keep getting a screetch noise out of first gear. its not all the time mostly within the first couple of miles driven, but the sound is horrible and its like ive got to almost just let the clutch out with no gas or launch it.... is this sound ever going to go away or is this what u get with performance clutches????
Mine did that a few times. Yes you need to let the clutch out quickly.
If you drop the clutch at 3000rpm in 2nd gear (yes, this is what the shops say to do) it will help mate the surfaces on your clutch and get rid of the chatter/squeal. If I drive a lot of stop and go, I need to drop the clutch every 500-1000mi to make it more drivable.
Blazeone has a good point to talk to installers and vendors....
Yeah mine does it if i let the clutch out too slow. I dont think its that horrible though. Never seen a child run in fear from the sound on me engaging my clutch.
This is very common with Tex clutch. I have the Z disk. When it starts to squeal, I slip the clutch in 3rd gear @ 20 mph to get some heat into the disk. This supposedly releases a lubricant. It does become quiet after doing this.
I asked if this clutch chatters at all at the shop that installed it, and they said no. Yes it does chatter, and 3000 miles later it still chatters.
No squealing from the clutch.
Is the chatter RPM dependent or a case where it always does it? The x-grip will chatter if you don't give it enough throttle during release but at 1,100 RPM drives just like stock.

Good question. I'll be finding out myself here pretty quick as I'm getting an "X-grip" with steel flywheel installed within the next week or so. (Thought it would go nicely with one of Rodney's Level V tranny/diff combos)
I have a Z-Grip with billet flywheel going into my Lingenfelter 403 build shortly. I will report what I find. I used to have a SPEC 3. When I first had it installed, the shop showed me how to drive it so it would break in properly. After that it didn't chatter except when I didn't give it enough rpm's when leaving a stoplight. I have to call the shop I bought the Tex from to find out about break in.
I think the lighter flywheel on the Tex helps contribute to some of the chatter that RPM will take care of since it is lighter, not the weight of aluminum, but 6 lbs lighter than stock and I believe the MOI is much less because of where the weight is located from the center compared to stock.
Keep us posted, because i am going to buy one in the next couple of months and i am debating between the z and x disks, since it my daily driver.
Be careful with the 02 Z06 motors and clutch replacement evidently certain LS6 motors had balance issues and they were finish balanced at the factory by using dowel pins in the flywheel. If the installer is not aware of this and do not transfer pins, you will have a vibration issue.
It would be nice if certain clutch manufacturers would acknowledge this with their install instruction but they don't. Seems like a reasonable request to me.
For daily driving the X should be fine. the Z seems to like abuse or ends up squealing after a month of easy driving.
Mine does exactly what you are talking about and I was about to post the same question. Although I think to get a true break in you need sticky tires. 1000 miles on the runflats didn't get me anywhere but 100 on Mickey's seem to do the trick as last night I did not notice ANY screeching.

Mine chattered when I first got it back and it got worse but eventually did get better but will still chatter if I am slow on the clutch release. I also have the drilled slave cylinder which makes the clutch feel like it is an on/off switch.
I don't think the clutch will ever not chatter if given a chance. I have the Z as well!
