Default Clutch problem on C5

ive got a 2000 C5 with around 70k miles on it (highway usage). Something went wacky with my clutch this morning, hoping someone might have some suggestions what may be wrong.

When i pressed in the clutch to change gears, it had the feeling like a spring had popped in the pedal - it was as firm as usual pressing it down, and a little past halfway there was this sort of poping sensation in the pedal then it was very loose going the rest of the way to the floor. After letting the clutch out though it became very tough. Now, pressing in the clutch does not seem to disengage, so i had to cut the engine to drop into first for the tow truck.

I noticed as the car was rolling up on the truck that there was a reddish color liquid leaking from the bottom front corner of the passenger door. Opening the door i noticed some of the liquid built up on the sill and there looked to be spots on the hinges where it may have dripped down from.

At the dealer, the guy said it looks like I need a new clutch. Wondering if this is accurate or if there may be more involved here. Also , what is a reasonable repair cost for this from a chevy dealership?

any info and advice would be appreciated. thanks!

i dont know why you would hav a red fluid coming out...which could be ATF fluid, which is inside the tranny....it would only come out IF the tranny case was cracked.

as far as cost to replace it....figure on 500-1100 for labor, plus parts if its the clutch...make SURE you replace slave with new one while in there just for safety sake.

yeah, the fluid was baffling me. especially the way it looked to be ONLY coming out from the passenger door sill. there was nothing dripping down from the engine compartment. There wasnt a whole lot of it maybe a little more than a shotglass worth. it spilled out when the car was at an angle, and nothing else after that. there wasnt any additional leaking when it was lowered from the truck either.

thanks for the advice on the slave. i see a lot of discussion of that around here, so i'll make sure they replace that as part of it. should i go back with aftermarket parts on any of this? i dont race so no need for any performance enhancing components, but if i can spend a few extra bucks to have something more reliable i definitely would.

thanks!

Hi The Villain -

It sounds to me like you just blew out your paster cylinder.

That would be relatively easy to replace (as opposed to a clutch which is much more involved).

You could replace it now, but with 70k miles on the stock clutch and slave/throwout you will likely be doing a clutch in the not so distant future anyway...

best regards -
