Is mobil one as good as red Line, Royal Purple? A lot of people who use these oils are pretty damned loyal. I would consider switching if it really were better, but I can get a 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 for 17.50 at Wall Mart. Anyone have ideas on this? Thanks
tom
Mobil 1 synthetic is probably not as good as the ones you mentioned, but unless you race, it is good enough. I'm thinking of switching to Red Line too, because I do a lot of high speed cross-country driving, but it is not "necessary." I've used Mobil 1 for many years, in all types of cars, without a problem. I guess we just like to "treat" our Vettes!!

There is a hot war on this very subject on the C4 board. I just reviewed Redline, Royal Purple, Mobil-1 and Amsoil. I decided to go with Amsoil since it meets all the specifications required (API, GM 4718M, etc.) and the 100 degree C viscosity is better then Mobil-1. I have used Redline products, and have had not problems, but am afraid to use them on my 02 vert since they are not API certified nor has it been tested to the GM 4718M specification. I think it would pass, but I just don't want to take the risk of a problem in the future and having issues with GM over the warranty. Just my $0.02
Hooters rocks....I knew some of the waitresses on Hilsburrough and USF area Hooters. that was a while ago, though, about 2 yrars since I moved to St. Pete! Do you guys go to local tracks? I just joined that link, by the way. :D
My father started using Mobil One back in the seventies. He put over 250K miles on a Pinto before ever pulling off the head. (And, when he did pull it, it was just to see how things looked.) He also put over 200K on a Thunderbird. He would change the oil every 12K and filter every 3K.
I realize that this was not a performance application, but he sold me on Mobil One. I may be wrong, but I think they were one of the first Synthetics too.
Certainly, the choice to use Mobil One was a business/political decision for GM, but I would guess that the general was thinking performance.
I run Mobil 1 in the engine, transmission and rear end on my C5. Mobil 1 is a good product with a hell of a lot of enginnering and research behind it. I have not observed anyone demonstrating a real difference between Mobil 1, Redline and other synthetics.
With all that in mind, I'll stick with the big company that the General likes.
They have been making Mobil 1 since...4ever and they use it in racing cars so I am SURE it's good enough...some people are always looking for an edge...that's why there are different products but you will not go wrong with Mobil 1...If it makes you feel better bout using something els...go for it...as long as it meets the General's specs it is covered under warranty...if not...you're on your own. :chevy

Mike,
When you used Mobil 1 (you did use synthetic?) for the rear end do you have to add in the GM LSD additive or can you go without like Redline? I want to change to Mobil 1 synthetic for both the MN6 and the LSD.
As stated above, I recently checked things out as best I could and chose Amsoil. If you read the back of the Mobil-1 ATF you will find that the carrier oil in the ATF is not synthetic.
