For the last couple of weeks I have had what I can best describe as a fairly loud hum coming from somewhere in the rear of the car. I cannot pinpoint the location and it is not constantly but most of the time while driving. It doesn't change with different speeds or shifting gears, pushing in the clutch, braking or anything- just sounds the same.
Any ideas?
How about when turning? If so, start looking at the wheel bearing hubs.
Do you mean it would stop humming or get louder or something while turning? What exactly should I look for at the hubs?
It just turned over 80,000 miles if that's any help. The noise is similar to how tires sound when driving on grooved pavement but not as loud as that would be.

The fuel pump tends to make a whining sound and he was talking about a humming...if its the hubs, I would imagine that when you go around turns you would hear more humming sound that you would if you were going straight. Have you checked the tranny fluid level? Any leaks from back there? You may want to block the front wheels, jack up the rears off the ground, turn off the traction control and spin up the wheels to see what you can hear.

Rear wheel bearing. If the noise gets slightly louder in a left hand turn, it's the RR bearing...slightlly less loud, the LR bearing. Get the bearing from Autozone...about $150...Timken. Half the cost of the stealership.

You paid to much, I found it at GMpartshouse.com for $143
I have an 02 ZO6 and it has a hum or noise that comes on at about 60 miles an hour. It is rearend noise and from what I have found out it is normal. I don't like it but it is their. I have changed the fluid twice and am going to change it again next week. I am putting Royal Purple in it to see what it does. It does seem strange that yours started doing it at 80,000 miles but S happens! Change the fluid, see if there is any metal shavings.
Good luck.
I wish I could meet Jake and shake his hand -- I just did this replacement on my right rear, and his description provided everything I needed to properly prepare and execute -- tools, parts, steps. THANKS, JAKE!
Oh, and I should give a thumbs-up to AutoZone, too -- ordered the bearing over their Internet website, and it arrived at my door (Tenn. to Va) _the next day_! Total to the door was a hair under $141.
No, I haven't been able to figure out which side it is, just haven't been driving it too far lately.
Also it could be what Redrocket said. I have never changed my rear end oil so it is probably about due.

For me that humming ended up being the ring gear in the differential...I found out when I went to launch at the track on my slicks and skinnies...sheared a few teeth off.
I suspect that after over 10K miles and well over 100 hard launches at the track this began to take a toll on the gears, and when I began to hear the noise I new something was up...so I was not suprised as to what happened at the track.

Funny, I'm looking in the forum with the same question....a hum that showns up around 60 to 65 MPH. I also have an 02 Z06. If the is normal I guess I won't worry about it.
I bet you the passenger cant hear it. I've had this problem as well. Not really a problem actually....I read somewhere on one of the threads that this a common thing on a c5. I believe it was the fuel pump on the drivers side. They said not to worry about it. I would always ask my passenger if they heard a humming noise and they would never. When I let my buddy drive it to see if I heard the noise, nothing from the passengers seat. Gotta love the c5's small problems such as this and that damn no start!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
