I searched so if this a I apologize profusely. I recently installed a Blackwing, did the idle relearn like I should've, run 93 octane gas. But I still have a bit of pinging on wide open throttle. This is mainly in 1st and 2nd gear. My car is an A4. Not sure what's going on here. Anyone have any ideas?
Are you sure it's really pinging? Mine did something similar and I realized that it did it with the AC on but not with it off. Then I opened the hood and determined that the sound seemed to be coming from the belt idler/tensoner thing. I wiggled that around a bit, hit it with some wd40, and no more "pinging".
I don't believe it's the tensioner as it seems to be tight. It's definitely a pre-detonation ping. I always use the same station for gas and it didn't do this before the Blackwing and idle relearn. Hmmm, maybe it's time for those 3.42's and the performance tune.

rcs128 I think you better change that idler/tensioner thing.. The bearings in it are sealed and a WD 40 "cure" probably will not last long. It may let go when you least expect it and you'll be stuck by the side of the road or worse! It is cheap and easy to change. If your serpentine belt comes off at speed or on the grape vine hill... you will wish you had!
I have been known to Keep @ Least 2 belts , 1 in the trunk so i dont get stranded ,just in case u have one that comes off , U will lose your Powersteering & the Coolant temps will start to sky rocket
I did the BW and got some pinging as well. I am in Vegas & elevation is 2000 ft. Not sure if that makes a diff or not. I removed the BW & went with the stock box & Z06 lid with some extra holes drilled out & a K&N. Done! No more pinging. My fog light eclosures are wide open & may play a part. not sure.

I'm very surprised. You would think the MAF would be able to overcome that small additional airflow.
I had the same trouble with the Blackwing. I also tried the stock air box trick, especially in the summer and it did work, but that kind of defeats the point of more airflow. I even tried retarding the timing a bit with my Predator and it did get rid of most of the ping.
I finally ended up with a ChuckCOW tune. Now, Blackwing on and no more pinging.

If you are getting more air the relearn isn't gong to help at WOT. You need your timing and or fueling adjusted = tune.
If the re-tune doesn't completely fix it, you might try the Sea Foam treatment. There is much talk about carbon build up in these engines which causes detonation and Sea Foam being an excellent cure. Just do a search on Sea Foam in here. Sea Foam in my tank also cured my fuel sending unit failure issues.
If you don't own it, find a friend and borrow their logging software. Run a 15-20 scan and you will find out what the problem is and the best fix. Anything else is just chasing down symptons and not the cause.
