there's no need to guess... plenty of us here have actually done this mod, and there is no "hissing" sound.

The main CATS on my 02 Coupe came apart internally (110K Miles and was throwing codes)

I bought a set of pipes from an 03 Z (without pups) from a forum member. Don't drag so don't know how much difference it made though sounds and feels a little hotter though the Borla Stingers.

Passed Smog with no problem here in San Diego.

How much ground clearance do you need to get the mid pips off? Can I put the car on ramps or does it need to be higher off the ground?

Thanks,

No problem; if you can get it high enough to get under it, you can get the midpipe off.
Just be sure to unhook the O2 sensors before you drop the pipe.
Here's an interesting suggestion; after you break up the ceramic brick in the pups, some of the junk might go down the pipe and lodge on the front of the main cats. Run a water hose in the opposite end to reverse flush the pipes. i've done this before wilth no ill effects; the cats see water condensation every time the car is cranked, so I can't see how wetting them could hurt them.
