I think "carpet tape" is generally a double sided thin white foam tape, isn't it?
If the original poster is looking for 3M double sided tape for attachment of body side moldings, emblems, etc...it can be found at some automotive parts supply sources or an automotive paint supply source...it's gray with a red backing. It can be found in different widths (1/2", 3/4", 1"). This product is more rubbery than foam.

Discount auto parts, auto Zone, Pep Boys. I just bought some from Discount auto the other day. They had it in two widths and in various length rolls. The automotive stuff is gray with a peel off that is a red wrapper. Word of caution. Don't try to use the other stuff from carpet stores or Home or Office centers, Most of those products are not intended for out door (sometimes wet) use. Clean the area first with rubbing alcohol before use.
