Actually, I’ve found it more complicated than red to red and black to black. I tend towards a jump start nowadays, and it needs a bit of coddling.
With a jump start I find I need to connect the jump, then insert the key to cancel the security code, pull the key, let the jump sit a moment, then insert the key and start the motor.

It's simple: the cutoff isn't 12V. Somewhere south of there, not exactly sure where. I've bump started mine with a junk battery a few times. Not flatlined, but nowhere close to rolling it over
