Actually, I’ve found it more complicated than red to red and black to black. I tend towards a jump start nowadays, and it needs a bit of coddling.
With a jump start I find I need to connect the jump, then insert the key to cancel the security code, pull the key, let the jump sit a moment, then insert the key and start the motor.

Unlike the point type ignition systems of the distant past, a newer car, such as a C-5, with a fully electronic ignition system, unless the ignition system is seeing a full 12V, getting the car rolling and "popping the clutch" won't get the car started.
